Tropical Storm Cristobal brought squalls with tropical storm-force winds to the mouth of the Mississippi River on Sunday morning, as conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate before the storm makes landfall somewhere in Louisiana by Sunday night. Cristobal’s maximum sustained winds remained at 50 mph and it was moving north at 12 mph, centered around 90 miles south of New Orleans, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). A tornado touched down Saturday evening near downtown Orlando, causing some damage and just missing a group of protesters at Lake Eola at around 7:30 p.m. In Louisiana, two brothers were killed Friday night getting caught in an undertow and swept away by a rip current as Cristobal churned in the Gulf of Mexico. The children, ages 8 and 10, were swimming at a beach in Grand Isle when they were caught and swept away, FOX8 reported. Officials said the boy's 12-year-old cousin was also caught in the rip current but survived.
A call about a suspicious van led to an ambush Saturday that resulted in the death of a Northern California sheriff’s deputy and injuries to two other law enforcement officers, according to reports. Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, 38, was fatally shot during the confrontation in Ben Lomond, an unincorporated area, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart said. A second deputy was injured, and a third officer from the California Highway Patrol was shot in a hand, the sheriff said. Gutzwiller was a married father of one child with a second child on the way, Hart told FOX 2 of the San Francisco Bay Area. “Words cannot express the pain we feel for Damon and his family," Hart told the station. "Today, we lost a hero." The suspect, identified as Steven Carrillo, 38, was shot during his capture and was being treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff added. #RIP

Five members of a Florida family on their way to a funeral -- including two young children -- were killed when their plane crashed in north Georgia, authorities said. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said the Piper 31T twin-engine turboprop aircraft went down six miles northeast of Eatonton. "The family was flying from Williston, FL to Newcastle, IN to attend a funeral," the sheriff's office said. The Federal Aviation Administration told FOX5 the aircraft crashed into an area of dense woods around 3:13 p.m. The plane reportedly encountered a line of thunderstorms as it passed over Putnam County, Georgia, but it was not immediately known if those storms were a factor in the crash. The pilot and owner of the aircraft was identified by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office as Larry Ray Pruitt, 67, of Morriston, Fla. Also killed were Shawn Charles Lamont, 41, and his wife, Jody Rae Lamont, and their children, Jayce, 6, and Alice, 4. The family was from Gainesville. All five were found dead at the scene.

Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King on Friday claimed that the cities experiencing the worst police brutality are run by Democrats. King denounced “generic” calls telling those protesting police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis to respond at the ballot box, saying voters need to be “very specific.” “Democrats, from top to bottom, are running the cities with the worst police brutality in America right now,” King wrote on Twitter. “We voted for them,” he said.
