A person in Denver allegedly carrying a weapon believed to be an ax was shot near the civic center Thursday evening in the proximity of protesters demonstrating against the death of George Floyd, according to reports. Police don’t believe the shooting was related to the protests, according to the Denver Post. One person was taken the hospital after the shooting, Denver police posted on Twitter, adding later that two walk-ins possibly related to the shooting were also being treated for a gunshot wound and a stab wound. There’s no update on anyone’s condition. It’s not clear what led up to the shooting and police said they have no suspect information yet. More than 200 miles south of Denver in Alamosa, Colo., a 27-year-old protester allegedly shot a 49-year-old man through his car window during a protest, Alamosa police said. James Marshall was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder among other charges. The victim was taken to the hospital. There is no update on his condition.

Seven people are dead in Alabama Friday following an overnight shooting, according to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to a gunshots call at 11:23 p.m. Thursday night in Valhermoso Springs, where there were multiple fatalities. Authorities said the victims are all adult males and females, but none of their identities have been released publicly. There is no threat to the public and the scene is secure, according to authorities. No further details were immediately available.

California Police Officer Dies After Contracting COVID-19. Officer Efren Coronel had been hospitalized in San Diego over the past three weeks before finally succumbing to the illness on Wednesday, according to The Imperial Valley Press. "It’s a tough time for the family and many police department personnel," El Centro Police Comander Aaron Reel told the newspaper. "I worked my entire career with Efren. He was my hero." The 51-year-old was a 24-year veteran of the El Centro Police Department and served as a senior patrol officer and was assigned Officer in Charge for his patrol team. Coronel began his carrer with the department on Dec. 17, 1996 and past assignments included school resource officer at Central Union High School, traffic investigations and motor officer. He was also active in youth athletics and served many years as coach of the Dynamo girls’ soccer team. He is survived by his wife and their son and a daughter. Funeral arrangements are pending. #RIP

Body camera footage shows Rock Falls Police Officer Ethan Riley and Whiteside County Sheriff's Deputy George Depuy rescue a 12-year-old girl from a house fire earlier this week. A child hospitalized after a deadly apartment fire Monday was released from OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. The 12-year-old Sterling girl and her mother were taken to OSF as a result of the fire at Western Apartments, 908 W. Third St., that killed three people. Police body camera footage of her rescue from the deadly fire was provided to Shaw Media on Wednesday. The camera was attached to officer Ethan Riley of the Rock Falls Police Department.

When Riley arrived, he rushed to help Whiteside County sheriff's deputy George Depuy reach the second-floor window of the southwestern suite. The officers climbed on the top of a Sterling Police Department SUV to get to the window. Depuy reached the window, nearly dangling while Riley held on to him.

"Walk toward the light," Depuy yelled. "Come on! Come to me!"

"I can hear them," Depuy said to officers on the ground.

Riley then went up on the roof of the SUV.

"I can't see ...," Riley said to Depuy before yelling inside, "Over here! Come here! Look at my flashlight. Look at my flashlight. Follow it right over here. Do you see my hand? Come here! Come here!"

The voice of a child could be faintly heard. The words were not said clear enough to be deciphered by the camera's audio.

"You're not, you're not! Just come over here, buddy! Come here!" the officers called out.

After some more cries for the child to come closer, she became more visible to Riley. Depuy and Sterling officer Mark Mendoza joined Riley at the window, rotating themselves at the ledge because of the intense heat.

As an orange glow started to brighten in the room, the child, with a blanket over her head, came within reach of Mendoza, who put his hands around her hips and lifted her through the window.

She was lowered down to other officers, who tended to her before medics arrived.

Flames reached the room 30 seconds later.

Riley fought off deep coughs while pacing on the nearby grass.

The footage was "heartbreaking to watch," Sterling Deputy Chief Alex Chavira said Wednesday.

"It's a very sad situation. All of our officers and our agency, our thoughts and prayers are with families and those who have been affected by this," he said.

"I'm proud of the officers' actions that night. We're glad our officers are OK. It's a very sad event."

Celina Serrano, 13, and her cousin, Shayla Walker, 8, of Davenport, died at the scene.

Neighbor Carrie A. (Hall) Hose, 49, also was killed.

Their autopsies were conducted Tuesday. Smoke inhalation is the preliminary cause of death; toxicology results are pending.

Instead of dispersing after the downtown Las Vegas protest was declared unlawful late Saturday, three men stuck around to set a Metro Police vehicle on fire. Four days later, the Las Vegas trio were in FBI custody, facing federal arson-related charges, according to the office of the U.S. attorney for the district of Nevada. They are Tyree Walker, 23, Devarian Haynes, 23, and Ricardo Densmore, 24. Video of the crime, shot from up-close, and their own social media posts helped authorities quickly identify them, according to a complaint. The arrests come as the federal government has vowed to crack down on opportunistic crimes from suspects who embed themselves into mostly peaceful protests following George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police. Police say one of the men arrested Wednesday allegedly shot th e video posted on social media that showed the other two pouring a flammable liquid into the patrol SUV through a missing window, lighting an object and dropping the gas inside.

A Kansas City police officer was waiting with a man for an ambulance and was trying to calm him down to figure out what medical help he needed when the man pulled out a kitchen knife and allegedly stabbed the officer in the chest. An Independence man has been charged in the stabbing of a Kansas City police officer, prosecutors announced Thursday. Austin R. Lewis, 24, was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action, Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced in a news release.

BUFFALO, New York -- All 57 of the members of the Buffalo Police Department's Emergency Response Team resigned Friday from the unit which responds to riots and other crowd control situations, the president of the union that represents Buffalo police officers told The Buffalo News. Two law enforcement sources confirmed the resignations. Two members of the Emergency Response Team were suspended without pay late Thursday after they were involved in pushing a 75-year-old protester to the ground as they were clearing the area in front of Buffalo City Hall at the emergency curfew. The Erie County District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident. No charges have been filed.
