A quarter of Michigan's workers are now jobless with more than one million residents applying for unemployment benefits amid the coronavirus pandemic. Michigan's increase in claims for unemployment benefits makes it the third highest state in the country behind California and Pennsylvania. The outbreak has now thrown at least 16.8 million Americans out of work since mid-March as tough measures to control the coronavirus abruptly grounds the country to a halt. Officials in Michigan say that more than one million people - or a quarter of the state's workforce - have so far filed for unemployment benefits. The latest Labor Department figures, which account for the three weeks from March 15 to April 4, show that just over 817,000 Michigan workers have applied for benefits. New figures will be released on Thursday that account for last week's claims, which could push the figure in line with the million claims the state is reporting.

A 2-year-old boy from Indiana found in a next-door neighbor's fish pond was declared a victim of drowning, authorities said on Tuesday. An autopsy revealed that Carter Pickerell had drowned after falling into the koi pond, according to a release from the Vanderburgh County Coroner. His father reportedly called police on Monday to report him missing. "There's no way he could've got out," the man said in a 911 call recording obtained by the Courier & Press. "I've checked the whole house, the basement, everything. I've been yelling his name." Roughly six minutes later he was located as police stayed on the line, Fox News reported. Paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene around 3:45 p.m. where they tried to resuscitate the boy at the residence located roughly 170 miles southwest of Indianapolis. "All lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful," the Evansville Police Department said in a news release.
The agencies that oversee the health of U.S. military personnel and veterans were pushing ahead this spring with the biggest overhaul of their health systems in three decades, USA Today reported. The initiatives aimed to shift up to 15 million patients to private care providers, shutter clinics and hospitals and reduce the number of military doctors and nurses. The Army, Navy and Air Force, along with the Defense Health Agency, had begun shedding patients and providers under reforms set into motion in 2017 under the National Defense Authorization Act. Veterans Affairs was due to send scores of veterans to neighborhood doctors and hospitals instead of VA facilities, also under legislation passed more than a year ago. Supporters of the change called it good for patients – because they’d gain access to improved care – and for the government – because it would save millions of dollars by eliminating redundant services.

FERGUSON TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania – Police released dash cam of a drug impaired man who tried to use one of the police cruisers as a “trampoline.” The 25-year-old man can be seen talking to an officer before throwing something at the car, dash cam footage shows. The suspect then runs to the cruiser and attempts to jump on it like a trampoline. “A drug impaired 25-year-old non-Centre County resident tried to use one of our police cars as a trampoline. Needless to say, it didn’t work. All Officers involved are okay. Charges are pending,” the police department said in a Facebook post. The windshield shattered as the man fell and police were able to detain him.
An Egyptian police officer and seven suspected militants were killed on Tuesday in an exchange of gunfire, the ministry of interior said in a statement late on Tuesday, It said three other policemen had also been wounded. The ministry received information “that there is a terrorist cell, whose elements embrace Takfiri ideology, using several areas as a shelter in eastern and southern Cairo as a starting point to carry out terrorist operations,” the statement said. Two private television stations broadcast what they called footage of the shooting, which we was not immediately able to verify. Weapons and ammunition were found with the suspects, the ministry said. The public prosecutor said a team of investigators has been despatched to the scene of the attack.
