Russia sent 60 tons of medical supplies to the United States to help combat the coronavirus after Russian President Vladimir Putin offered them to President Donald Trump when the two spoke on Monday. The supplies landed at John F. Kennedy airport in New York on Wednesday and were criticized on both sides of the Atlantic. American officials questioned Putin's motives in making the offer and Russian health officials described their own needs for such equipment. Putin made the offer of help to Trump, who accepted it. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that the U.S. paid for the supplies, but did not disclose the amount. But the assistance from Russia was also met with criticism from some American diplomats, who asked whether President Trump is ignoring Putin's motivation in sending the supplies.

Fauci is one of a number of medical advisers for the president and is known to have earned Trump's respect and confidence. He encouraged the president to extend the timeline for social distancing and was blunt about the grim outlook suggesting the possible toll of the pandemic in the U.S. could be as high as 240,000 deaths.
The first case of coronavirus has been confirmed on Los Angeles' Skid Row, the location of one of the largest stable populations of homeless people in the U.S. with over 5,000 inhabitants, 3,000 of which sleep in tents or on the sidewalk. The lack of access to washing facilities and high population density has sparked fears that the coronavirus could spread like wildfire through the homeless community of LA. The first case is that of an employee of the Union Rescue Mission, according to the Los Angeles Times, and is being treated at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center. Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti wears a face mask while promoting the 'safer at home' initiative', which is advice particularly difficult for homeless people to follow. He has said that #LA is taking action to help those who are experiencing homelessness during the crisis.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin refuted a report that said it would take up to 20 weeks for some Americans to get their stimulus checks, saying it would weeks and not months. 'I have previously said that it will take three weeks, I am pleased to report within two weeks, the first payments will be direct deposited into taxpayers accounts,' Mnuchin said Thursday at the daily White House coronavirus briefing. But a report from House Democrats found most people won't see their payments from coronavirus stimulus bill until April 13 and, for some, it could take up to 20 weeks to get a check. Mnuchin shot that down when asked about it. 'I don't know where you're hearing these things,' he told the reporter who quizzed him on it. 'I told you this would be three weeks. I am now committing to two weeks. We are delivering on our commitments. The IRS that I oversee within two weeks, the money will be in people's accounts.'
The US was the first country to report 1,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day on Wednesday as the death toll soared past 5,000 - and it continues to rise. With more than 236,000 infections across the country, America is now worse affected by COVID-19 than any other country in the world has been. The virus shows no signs of slowing down, despite the entire nation being on lockdown, and experts say as many as 200,000 will die by the time the pandemic is over. On Thursday, the death toll continued to rise to 5,647.

The US Navy has relieved the captain of the coronavirus-stricken aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt days after his plea for help for his sailors went public. Acting US Navy Secretary Thomas Modly announced on Thursday afternoon that Captain Brett Crozier had been relieved of his command of the nuclear aircraft carrier, four days after he penned a scathing letter to Navy leaders calling for stronger action to address the COVID-19 outbreak he said was unnecessarily threatening his sailors lives.
Global coronavirus cases have soared past one million as the pandemic explodes in the US and the death tolls continue to climb in Italy and Spain, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
