His exceptional investigative work earned him the 2023 Special Investigations Unit Wingman Award, but it was his kindness, empathy and willingness to help those around him that truly defined his service

BREAKING: Michael Sanft, the defense attorney who represented Duane “Keffe D” Davis in the Tupac Shakur murder trial, has been found dead in Las Vegas, according to Code Three News

Sanft, 54, was reportedly found deceased Thursday night, November 5. His cause of death has not been released, and details surrounding the circumstances remain limited.

Sanft represented Davis during the high-profile trial, which ended in a guilty verdict. He had also planned to appeal the conviction.

Elections have consequences. Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to commute the death sentences of California’s condemned inmates to life in prison without the possibility of parole is another example of an administration whose actions raise serious questions about its commitment to victims, public safety, and the will of California voters.

This decision has far-reaching consequences, particularly here in Riverside County, where 127 inmates on California’s death row were sentenced for crimes committed in our county. Behind those cases are innocent lives taken, families forever devastated, and communities that continue to live with the consequences of some of the most heinous crimes imaginable.

These sentences were not handed down without due process. They followed extensive investigations, lengthy trials, evidence presented in court, and decisions made by juries and judges.

NEW: A Wisconsin state trooper has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is facing deportation to South Africa, according to his lawyer.

Aaron Van Der Merwe, 21, was detained Thursday as he was waiting to board a domestic flight, according to a statement issued by law firm Christopher & De León.

His attorney, Marc Christopher, claims that when Van Der Merwe showed agents his federal work permit and explained he had a pending asylum application, they told him they "did not care" before detaining and taking him to a detention facility.

When officers arrived shots were fired from inside the home. We have issued a shelter in place order for all homes within a half mile radius as we try to negotiate his surrender. The concept that Karen Bass lost because of the Palisades fire is arguably not true. Bass actually ended up solidly winning the Palisades and adjacent west side. Where Bass overhwelmingly lost to Nithya Raman is the east side, where there's a dense Hispanic/Latino population who probably don't care about the Palisades fire.

So frustrated.  Before I retire, I was hoping to put a sexual assault trauma site in the heart of Skid Row to help give the women a friendly and local place to get treated so we can get them justice and rapid support. After almost two years of progress, we are back to square one, with a new administration. I am not giving up. Praying we can make this happen. It’s so import. 

I want to thank the administration of the outgoing Mayor for helping to get this initiative in motion.  They were truly responsive. 

Once again; Joseph’s don’t quit. We will find a way to get it done once the new administration settles in. The SA victims of Skid Row deserve this.
