NEW: A woman was inside her minivan in traffic when a massive tree came crashing down on her in Santa Clarita, California, Austin Dave reports.
The van was traveling north on McBean Parkway near Magic Mountain Parkway around 12:40 p.m. when the tree toppled onto it amid strong Santa Ana winds. The woman was injured but got out and made it to an ambulance, a witness said.
Witness Christian and his father were about 100 feet away when they heard the tree fall.
NWS Los Angeles warned that gusts of 50 to 70 mph were possible in wind-prone areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including the Interstate 5 corridor. The agency warned that damaging winds could topple trees and power lines.

NEW DETAILS: Two people are being hailed for their bravery in the Bend, Oregon, school shooting, including a teacher who physically confronted the armed suspect.
A teacher fought back against a school shooter as an armed bystander rushed into a classroom and opened fire, striking the gunman multiple times, police say.
In a new update on the Silver Rail Elementary School shooting in Bend, Oregon, authorities say the suspect entered a classroom and fired as many as 15 rounds, striking all of the victims inside.
A 36-year-old man who had parked at the school retrieved a legally secured handgun from his vehicle and rushed toward the building. After hearing gunfire and spotting the teacher physically struggling with the suspect, he entered the classroom and fired his weapon.
Police say the exact number of rounds fired remains under investigation.

Just after 7 a.m. Friday, Placer County Sheriff’s Office K9 Sonic was shot by an armed woman barricaded inside a home on Quarry Lane in Penryn. K9 Sonic was rushed to a veterinary hospital for treatment. During an exchange of gunfire, the woman, 30-year-old Linda Mullennix was struck.
Late Thursday evening detectives attempted to serve an arrest warrant for resisting/obstructing a peace officer (148 PC) and an eviction order signed by a judge on Mullennix. Mullennix also has a history of threatening neighbors, was known to be in possession of a gun, and has been the subject of multiple calls for service. She then pointed a gun at the detective from a window inside the home and threatened to shoot him.
We ask our community to join us in praying for our K9 officer and his handler. He is in excellent hands at Loomis Basin Veterinary. He was hit in the leg and is expected to recover.🙏🏻

NEW: A member of a Canadian-based drug trafficking organization that moved large amounts of narcotics throughout North America was convicted at trial on the afternoon of October 16, 2026, in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
David Joner, 58, a known trafficker from Fall City, Washington, was found guilty on October 16, 2026, of one count of conspiracy with intent to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and one count of conspiracy to export cocaine.
According to the indictment, the DTO, which was led by defendant Tenny Guon Lim, a convicted Canadian drug trafficker also known as “The Goat” and “Max Power,” sent multi-kilogram quantities of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), also known as “ecstasy” or “molly,” to the United States in exchange for multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine, which was obtained by U.S.-based associates in Mexico. Lim is currently in Canada pending extradition to the U.S.
