NEW: An off-duty Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department corrections officer was shot Monday night near the intersection of Cheyenne and Buffalo.
The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. First responders and Metro police surrounded the person who witnesses say was shot. The injured corrections officer was then taken away and went into surgery Monday night.
A witness said the shooting happened in a parking lot of several businesses. He said he heard several gunshots and then saw a man in dark clothing with a gun in his hand. The witness said it appeared the man had a towel wrapped around his wrist.

Laguna Beach police literally went above and beyond to catch a suspected home intruder.

BREAKING: Democrats on the Senate Homeland Security Committee just blocked a Republican effort to offer immunity to a former Dr. Fauci assistant in exchange for her testimony. She has been accused of destroying government documents on Fauci's behalf. Only one Democrat showed up to the meeting (Sen. Hassan D-NH), the other six voted no by proxy. All eight Republicans showed up.
The resolution required a two-thirds vote to pass and it failed 8-7 along party lines.
The unnamed former Fauci assistant previously pleaded the Fifth Amendment before the committee and refused to answer any questions, hence the GOP effort to offer her immunity from prosecution in exchange for her testimony.
Republicans on the committee blasted their Democratic colleagues for not showing up, and for "having no interest in the truth."
Chairman Rand Paul (R-KY): "There's no principal reason to vote against giving her immunity, the only reason is that you don't want her to answer, and you do not want to know the truth."
Sen: Ron Johnson (R-WI): "I do not want to see Anthony Fauci's assistant go to jail. I want the truth. I think it's pretty obvious today, we only have one Democrat here, we're not going to get it."

AUSTIN MAN beat a woman to death, left her body under a tarp in his yard for two days, then buried her in a backyard burn pit -- and never faced a single day in court for the murder, because Travis County prosecutors missed the deadline to indict him.
Ad now he'll be released from prison in March, according to Texas prison records.
The victim was Natalie Renee Pearce, a 36-year-old caregiver who worked with adults with developmental disabilities and helped run a horse therapy program.
Peter Perius picked her up near Rundberg Lane and brought her home to get high on meth. He texted his nephew afterward that he didn't want to spend the second half of his life in prison.
He apparently is getting his wish and will be a free man soon.
Perius was charged with murder, bond set at $500,000. Then the case sat. In February 2024, a judge dismissed the murder charge because prosecutors failed to meet deadlines.

NEW: Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) says DHS is "the single greatest threat to our public safety today" while announcing a bill that dismantles DHS entirely & abolishes ICE. She claims her bill would keep TSA, FEMA, and CISA, but would get rid of ICE, CBP, and Border Patrol, and that customs work at ports of entry and airports would somehow continue, even though she would be eliminating the agency responsible for that customs work (CBP).
No CBP/Border Patrol/ICE = complete open borders and an end to all immigration enforcement entirely.
Ramirez says she will introduce the legislation in the coming weeks, and she knows it will be "agitating".
"Let's be frank, we know that this bill is going to be agitational," Ramirez said. "When they ask us why we made the choices we made, we're going to remind them of the moment we're living. We're going to remind them that in the last 72 hours, 28 year old Wilbur Rafael Garces Perez was shot in the back. And as of yesterday, he slept with a bullet in his back.
