BREAKING: Two national sheriffs’ groups are urging the Supreme Court to overturn Cook County’s assault weapon ban, saying it leaves victims vulnerable when cops are slow to respond to violent situations.

The National Sheriffs’ Association and Western States Sheriffs’ Association filed a brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Cook County’s ban on AR-15s, arguing that the weapons are essential for self-defense when police response times are insufficient. In the case Viramontes v. Cook County, which was consolidated with a challenge to Connecticut’s similar ban, the groups contend that AR-15s are commonly owned (estimated at 44 million rifles in circulation) and operate similarly to other semiautomatic rifles. They assert that the ban primarily affects law-abiding citizens rather than criminals and relies on prior Supreme Court decisions protecting widely used firearms. The Seventh Circuit had previously upheld the Cook County ordinance, which has prohibited such "assault weapons" since 1993.

A Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputy was sent to the hospital after being struck by lightning while sitting in his parked cruiser Thursday.

The incident happened outside Miami-Dade Fire Rescue headquarters in Doral.

Officials said the deputy was working an off-duty assignment when lightning struck his vehicle during a major storm passing through the area.

A dispatcher was recorded saying, “Respond to officer’s vehicle possibly hit by lightning; officer not feeling well.”

The deputy is said to be recovering following the lightning strike.

A two-vehicle, head-on crash involving a Polk County sheriff's deputy has shut down traffic on Cypress Parkway/Johnson Avenue between Haines City and Poinciana, the sheriff's office said.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. on Johnson Avenue/Cypress Parkway near the intersection with Lake Marion Creek Road.

The deputy was on duty and in a patrol vehicle, sheriff's spokesperson Carrie Horstman said.

The sheriff's office said the deputy is stable and alert in the hospital with a hip and leg injury and laceration to his arm. The other driver was also taken to a hospital, but no information was immediately available on his injuries.
