1,000 investigations. Countless children and families impacted.

Special Victims Unit Detective James Phelps, who is assigned to the Children's Justice Center, recently reached an extraordinary career milestone: his 1,000th investigation.

For the past 15 years, he's investigated reports of suspected felony-level child abuse, helping protect children and support families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

"Every day, there is a child somewhere being abused who doesn't have a voice and doesn't have anyone to help them. That was true 15 years ago, and it's true today."

The work has been both challenging and rewarding. The cases Detective Phelps investigates affect children and families in profound ways, and while it's heartbreaking that so many require intervention, he says knowing he's been able to make a positive difference for families is what makes the work meaningful.

Over the years, technology has transformed investigations, but Detective Phelps believes one thing has never changed: communication.

"Our cases often have very little physical evidence. Interviewing people, asking open-ended questions, and getting detailed information are still the foundation of what we do."

In addition to his work investigating child abuse cases, Detective Phelps has served as the Clark County Sheriff's Office polygrapher since 2013, conducting more than 460 polygraph examinations in support of investigations across our agency.

As he looks toward retirement, he's focused on mentoring the next generation of Special Victims Unit detectives—passing along the knowledge and experience that mentors and fellow detectives shared with him throughout his career.

Today, the Dallas Police Department honored fallen officers Lieutenant Robert Cormier #1599 and Chief Pilot James “Chuck” Taylor R7868 with ceremonial street toppers at the intersection of Canton Street and S. Second Avenue.

On July 24, 1984, Helicopter Pilots, Lt. Robert Cormier, #1599 and Reserve Officer James Taylor, #R7868, were tasked with finding landing sites for the upcoming Republican Convention. During flight, the propeller struck a newly installed radio tower causing the helicopter to crash. Lt. Cormier and Officer Taylor died instantly.

Members of the command staff and the Department, along with members of Lieutenant Robert Cormier #1599 and Chief Pilot James “Chuck” Taylor R7868 family were in attendance for the unveiling.

At least nine schools across the U.S. are now being equipped with drones designed to distract a school shooter until police arrive.

These drones have flashing strobe lights, sirens and pepper gel.

Today, we join the Lynn Police Department and the entire Lynn community in mourning the loss of Town Marshal Brad Fisher, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Marshal Fisher was struck by a vehicle as he was deploying stop sticks during a vehicle pursuit Wednesday morning. According to witnesses, the driver of the fleeing vehicle intentionally struck Marshal Fisher.

Marshal Fisher was 50 years old and is survived by his wife and two children. His son also serves as a law enforcement officer. Marshal Fisher also served his community as a firefighter.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow officers.

The Schenectady Police Department, NY, sadly announced the death of Detective Timothy Higgins following his courageous battle with cancer.

"During the overnight hours of July 27, 2026, Detective Timothy Higgins passed away at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City following a prolonged battle with cancer.

Detective Higgins joined the Schenectady Police Department in 2010 and dedicated his professional life to serving the residents of the City of Schenectady. He most recently served as a Detective in the Youth Aid Bureau and previously served in the Criminal Investigations Unit. Before that, he worked as a general patrol officer and a community police officer assigned to both the Woodlawn and Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods."

WATCH: Dashcam video captures the terrifying moment a pickup truck blows through a stop sign and slams into a tractor-trailer at a rural Iowa intersection.

The violent crash sends debris flying across the roadway. Authorities say the impact also pushed the vehicles into a third vehicle that was stopped nearby.

Three people were hospitalized, and officials say every vehicle involved was a total loss. The crash remains under investigation.

Lacey Fire District 3 WA has announced the death of firefighter Jake Johnson following an off-duty fall that led to his hospitalization.

From the fire department on Wednesday morning:

"With heavy hearts, Lacey Fire District 3 mourns the loss of Firefighter Jake Johnson.

Jake was a firefighter, a teammate, and a friend who answered the call to serve others with courage and compassion. His loss is felt deeply by everyone who knew him and served alongside him.

Over the past several days, we have witnessed an extraordinary outpouring of love and support from our community and from people far beyond it. The prayers, messages of hope, and countless acts of kindness shared on Jake’s behalf have been a powerful reminder of the impact he had on those around him and the strength of the fire service family and the communities we serve."
