On Friday, July 28, 2023, Deputy Sheriff Alejandro Martinez died from injuries he sustained on November 16, 2022, when he and fellow recruits from Academy Class 464 were struck by a vehicle during their morning physical training.

The class of 75 recruits was running in formation near the intersection of Mills Avenue and Telegraph Road in Whittier when an oncoming vehicle crossed the center line and plowed into the group. The driver struck 25 recruits before the vehicle came to a stop. Twelve recruits suffered catastrophic injuries that permanently ended their law enforcement careers.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Martinez was officially sworn in as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy two weeks after the crash. He remained hospitalized in critical condition for more than eight months before succumbing to his injuries.

The driver was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and nine counts of reckless driving on a highway.

Deputy Martinez was also a soldier in the U.S. Army National Guard. He had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for just eight weeks when he was critically injured. He is survived by his father and his sister.

Sara Duffey had secured a protective order against her estranged husband. Another mother had also sought protection for her teenage daughter after making disturbing allegations against him.
