UPDATE: Dozens arrested in federal crackdown on India-based crime groups.
"Today, as part of βOperation Hard Ball,β law enforcement in the U.S., Canada, and Europe unsealed indictments charging 37 defendants linked to three India-based criminal syndicates in three separate indictments.
These defendants, including two crime bosses already imprisoned in India, are charged with racketeering conspiracy, extortion, trafficking bulk quantities of cocaine by semi-trucks, and murder, including the June 2023 assassination of a political and religious figure as he left a Sikh temple in broad daylight in Canada.
Victims of these transnational criminal syndicates include members of the Indian diaspora, some in the Los Angeles area. They were extorted and threatened by these criminals, who used their notoriety for violence to make money. Another cash cow was drug trafficking, including shipping cocaine and other narcotics stolen from rival crews from the U.S. into Canada.
These ruthless criminals spread misery worldwide. Law enforcement agencies will continue to coordinate globally to combat them wherever they are.

Today, we honored the life and legacy of Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Deputy David S. Piquette on the 20th anniversary of his End of Watch, July 7, 2006.
Deputy Piquette proudly served our nation in the United States Marine Corps before joining the Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Department in 1996. During his 10 years of service, he was assigned to the Inmate Reception Center, Century Sheriffβs Station, and the Training Bureau, where he served as a Defensive Tactics Instructor, helping prepare the next generation of deputies.
Today, his family, friends, fellow deputies, and future LASD recruits came together for a memorial run to honor his life, service, and sacrifice. Deputy Piquette was 34 years old when he was tragically killed in an automobile collision and is survived by his wife and their two children.
We also thank California State Senator Bob Archuleta who represents the 30th Senate District for ensuring Deputy Piquetteβs legacy lives on through the designation of the Deputy David Piquette Memorial Highway along State Route 91, from the Glassell Street overpass to the N. Tustin Avenue overpass.
Twenty years later, Deputy David S. Piquetteβs courage, commitment, and selfless service continue to inspire all who wear the badge and those preparing to earn it.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces completed a new round of offensive strikes against Iran, July 7, hitting over 80 targets with precision munitions as an immediate response to Iran's latest attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. forces struck Iranian air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps small boats in and near the strait to degrade Iranβs ability to continue attacking international commerce flowing through the international trade corridor.
Iran recently attacked three commercial vessels transiting the strait including Marshall Islands-flagged M/T Al Rekayyat, Saudi Arabia-flagged M/T Wedyan, and Liberian-flagged M/T Cyprus Prosperity. The unwarranted aggression by Iranian forces is a clear and dangerous violation of the ceasefire and undermines freedom of navigation.
CENTCOM forces remain postured and prepared to hold Iran accountable when the agreement is not adhered to or obeyed.

Why so much security? Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith says it's about protecting everyone involved in the Tyler Robinson preliminary hearing.
With armed deputies, tactical officers and increased courthouse security drawing attention, Smith told KUTV the precautions reflect the emotions surrounding the high-profile case.
"When there's such highly charged emotions on both sides of this, we have to factor that in and account for emotions," Smith said. "Everybody's emotions can go from sorrow to rage. So you want to make sure that when it goes to rage, we're here to make sure it's safe."
Robinson is accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in 2025. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. The preliminary hearing is expected to continue throughout the week.

The force of the collision caused that car to strike the rear bumper of a third car.
The trooper was treated for their injuries at the scene, the driver of the second car was hospitalized and the driver of the third car refused treatment.
