BREAKING: Emergency fire evacuations are underway this morning near the Aspen Acres neighborhood, southeast of San Isabel, for a new fire in Custer County, Colorado.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office says anyone within 1 mile of Aspen Acres should leave immediately. Winds are already strong in the area, so conditions may change quickly.

Evacuation area has been expanded. Anyone in the area of Lazy Acres and Bishops Castle on Hwy 165 must evacuate.

Happening Now: Authorities are working to restore full control of the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center, NC, after inmates overpowered correctional staff and took two guards hostage Monday morning.

Around 5 AM this morning, inmates at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center overpowered correctional staff and seized control of the facility, prompting an immediate response from local, state, and federal authorities.

The inmates inside the detention center assaulted on-duty guards and gained control of portions of the building. At the time of the takeover, a total of 88 inmates and 3 guards were inside the facility. Shortly after the incident began, one guard was able to escape the facility, while two guards were taken hostage.

At roughly 9:30 a.m., negotiations led to the safe release of 18 inmates and the two guard hostages, who were able to exit the facility without further injury.  Around 9:50 AM, another large group of inmates was released and exited the facility. Law enforcement agencies and detention center administrators continue to work toward a peaceful resolution and the restoration of full control of the facility."

Today we pause to honor the three wildland firefighters who lost their lives while responding to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado.

The identities of the three firefighters who died battling a fire at the Utah-Colorado border this weekend. The firefighters were assigned to the Rifle Helitack crew and were engaged in initial attack operations on the Knowles Fire when the incident occurred, officials said.

The USDA Forest Service said they are Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan; Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Glendale, Arizona; and Sydney Watson, 26, of Warrior, Alabama.

“This is an incredibly difficult moment for the entire wildland fire community,” said Forest Service Deputy Chief Sarah Fisher. “Our heavy hearts are with the families during this unimaginable time. We recognize the tremendous impact this loss has on them and are deeply grateful for the devotion their loved ones brought to our organizations. We will honor their memory with compassion and support as their selfless service and commitment create an enduring legacy.”

NEW: A local teenager is being called a hero after quickly putting out a fire that was intentionally set near two homes in the Sherman Oaks area.

Security video captured a man allegedly setting the fire in the middle of the night, but thanks to the teen’s fast actions, no homes were damaged and no one was injured.📷CBS LA

NEW: North Jersey sheriff's officer injured on the job files lawsuit.

A retired Morris County Sheriff's officer, Robert Nielsen, sued the sheriff's department and Morris County, claiming discrimination due to his disability. He injured his knees while subduing an inmate in 2024 and was denied a retirement shield and ID, which he says violates LEOSA and the NJLAD. The lawsuit seeks compliance with these laws and reimbursement for legal fees.

NEW: A traveling New Orleans rock band had their equipment stolen in San Francisco over the weekend -- just days into a month-long summer tour.

Both of the band’s touring vehicles were broken into, according to an online fundraiser set up on their behalf. A “significant amount of the band’s instruments, personal items, and valuable sentimental belongings” were stolen.

We’re proud to announce Officer Smart as 2025 Patrol Officer of the Year! Officer Smart has spent the last seven years in the Downtown Area Command (DTAC). His tenure in a highly operational unit, such as DTAC nightshift, is remarkable, and lends itself to the incredible amount of experience and community connections he possesses.

DTAC routinely sees new officers, and Officer Smart can always be counted on as a de-facto field training officer of sorts for those unfamiliar with the unique policing downtown Austin requires. He does this formally when tasked to do so, but also informally by coaching and mentoring officers on known problem areas, known suspects, crime trends, etc. Within the past year he has taken an active role in mentoring some of the officers who have quickly become some of the most productive officers in all of DTAC. Officer Smart’s seniority does not stop him from being just as proactive. In 2025, Officer Smart authored 238 offense reports; 103 of these were custody arrests which he made. These include multiple arrests for DWI, Possession of Controlled Substance, Assaults, and Firearms related offenses. Additionally, Officer Smart consistently produces the most thorough and well-written reports on the shift for which he routinely earns praise from investigative units.

His work product never declines, and he always maintains a high degree of professionalism as a shift leader. This speaks volumes to not only his positive attitude, but also his resilience as an officer. Congratulations, Officer Smart!
