NEW: A wrong-way driver was killed Friday night after a head-on crash with a marked Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser on OH 2 in Lake County, according to a news release from OSHP.
The crash happened just before 9 p.m. Friday on westbound OH 2 near OH 44 in Painesville Township.
Investigators said a trooper was traveling west in a marked patrol vehicle when a brown 2011 Toyota Scion, traveling east in the westbound lanes, struck the cruiser head-on. Following the initial impact, the Scion caught fire.
The driver of the Scion, identified as Jerry Alberico, 61, of Mentor, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities confirmed.
The trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to University Hospitals TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township for treatment, officials said. Please join us in sending prayers and, or positive thoughts for his recovery🙏🏻

It looks bad but I’m told the driver in the pickup that flipped was okay! 🙏🏼
We should have more information on all the wrecks later this evening or tomorrow. Troopers have been busy with getting all this cleared up.
