DEVELOPING: A prescribed burn on Pine Mountain in Central Oregon was declared a wildfire this afternoon after multiple spot fires spread outside the planned burn area. The fire, now named the Pine Mountain Fire, is burning about 14 miles southeast of Bend in the Deschutes National Forest and has grown to an estimated 2000 acres as of this afternoon with 0% containment. Low humidity and breezy winds are fueling a rapidly changing life-safety situation. Have a plan if you are in the area.

The dignified transfer escort carrying the body of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor arrived at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home in Peabody just after 8pm following the nearly 25 mile journey from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Boston on Thursday evening.
Final arrangements for a full honors wake and funeral are still being processed and are expected to take place sometime next week.

On August 15, 1991, an 8-year-old child was kidnapped by a stranger in Plano, Texas while walking with a friend to their community pool. The child was sexually abused by the stranger over the course of several hours before being released 20 miles away from her home. Despite Plano PD's best investigative efforts, the case went cold.

The evidence that had been collected was maintained at SWIFS in Dallas, Texas. In 2004, a DNA profile for the perpetrator was developed and then put into CODIS. While a suspect had not been identified, the profile matched an unsolved case in Dallas, Texas. In this particular case, a 9-year-old child was kidnapped and sexually assaulted before being released approximately 40 miles away from her home.

In 2023, Plano PD Detective Benzick came across a newspaper article about the case and reached out to Dallas PD Detective DeAngelis. After discussing the case, they decided to put in the hard work required to solve a case largely utilizing Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy. This technique required Detective Benzick to interview countless individuals and obtain numerous DNA profiles to develop a suspect. At the same time, Detective DeAngelis had to work through massive amounts of evidence collected from the offense in order to find viable sources of suspect DNA.

Once the suspect was identified, the pieces began to fall into place. An individual by the name of Nicholas Carney, was living in the Dallas area at the time of the offenses. He also drove the vehicles described by the children and matched the description forensic sketch artists compiled from their statements. Additional investigative work and evidence led to confirming Carney was indeed the suspect they had been looking for. He was eventually arrested and convicted of these heinous crimes, and as of January 15, 2026, will be serving life in prison.

When detectives first started working these cases, the victims had already given up hope they would ever be solved. However, thanks to the outstanding investigative work of Dallas PD's and Plano PD's very own Detective DeAngelis, & Benzick, the cases were officially put to rest.

On behalf of the victims, their families, and our office, we want to thank Detectives DeAngelis and Benzick for seeing justice served, putting an end to these atrocious crimes, and helping every affected individual find closure.

Detective DeAngelis was a awarded the Super Sleuth Award during the annual Collin County Crime Victims Luncheon, on April 22, 2026.

PHILADELPHIA POLICE OFFICER RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL AFTER SHOOTING

A Philadelphia Highway Patrol officer who was shot during a traffic stop in North Philadelphia has been released from the hospital.

Fellow officers stood outside Temple University Hospital on Wednesday, saluting as the injured officer was wheeled out of the facility.

Investigators say the officer was shot in the leg Monday night while conducting a safety frisk during a traffic stop.

Police say the suspect’s firearm discharged during the encounter.

Authorities arrested 26-year-old Rashid Walker at the scene on firearms charges.

Praying for the California Highway Patrol officer who was injured in the line of duty this evening.🙏🏻

A California Highway Patrol officer was injured after being hit by a vehicle off Highway 99 in Fresno on Thursday evening.
CHP says the motorcycle officer was slowing down to help a disabled vehicle on the side of the road on the southbound Highway 99 and Highway 180 interchange when a vehicle came up from behind and rear-ended the officer, throwing him off his bike.
The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver who hit the officer stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers.

Tennessee: A Metro Nashville Police officer was injured Thursday night in an altercation with a pedestrian.
MNPD officers at the scene told WSMV4 that the officer was exiting I-440 onto West End Avenue when he spotted a pedestrian walking on the ramp.
The officer stopped and spoke with the individual, and officers at the scene said for unknown reasons the incident escalated to an altercation, police said.

Once the altercation was under control and additional police personnel arrived at the scene, the officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.
