GOP Sen. Brenner sees 'a bunch of appointments' ahead

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is expected to announce his resignation from office Thursday in a development that caught plenty of people at the Statehouse off guard.
Statehouse officials and one elected official told The Ohio Press Network Wednesday evening the scuttlebutt: Yost would resign. Ohio State Senator Andrew Brenner (R-Delaware) told OPN that he assumes Yost will go to the U.S. Attorney's Office or Deputy US Attorney General. Brenner also stated the announcement could trigger "a bunch of appointments "[Keith] Faber to AG, [Frank] LaRose to Auditor, [Robert] Sprague to Secretary of State and [Jay] Edwards to Treasurer.""
The Columbus Dispatch reported the breaking news early Thursday morning, citing two sources close to the situation. Other outlets, including the Statehouse News Bureau, reported that Yost is resigning to accept a private sector job after more than two decades in state government.
OPN reached out directly to Attorney General Dave Yost Wednesday morning but did not get a response. OPN also reached out to Steve Irwin — Yost’s Communications Director — and left a message but no return call was received before this report published. OPN learned last week that recent Communications Director Bethany McCorkle left the AG’s office for another gig.
Yost, a Republican who has held the statewide post since 2019 after two terms as state auditor, is term-limited and cannot run for re-election to the AG post in November. He launched a gubernatorial bid last year but stepped aside when the state party endorsed newcomer Vivek Ramaswamy. Governor Mike DeWine will now have to appoint an interim attorney general to serve out the final months of the term that ends in January 2027.
The potential ripple effect is exactly what Brenner flagged. With Faber already the GOP nominee for attorney general and LaRose, Sprague and Edwards positioned for other top jobs, one resignation could quickly open a string of vacancies that DeWine would again fill by appointment.
Efforts to reach DeWine’s office for comment Thursday morning were not immediately returned.
This marks the latest shakeup in Ohio’s constitutional offices, following DeWine’s earlier appointment of Jon Husted to the U.S. Senate (after vacated the seat following being elected Vice President) and Jim Tressel to lieutenant governor to fill Husted’s post.

BREAKING: DeCarlos Brown ‘not competent’ in light rail stabbing federal case.

DeCarlos Brown, the man accused of stabbing Iryna Zarutska to death on a Charlotte light rail train, was found incompetent to stand trial in federal court for charges related to the killing, according to court documents obtained by Channel 9.

Brown was already evaluated to be incompetent to stand trial on North Carolina state charges in the case, according to his defense attorney. New court documents were filed on Thursday in the federal case against Brown, and they outline the process of what’s next.

This is for his federal case. A judge will make the ultimate call here on whether he's incompetent to stand trial or if a medical team will try to restore his competency.

BREAKING: Nearly 500 homes damaged/inaccessible in several Mississippi counties following yesterday’s severe weather/tornado outbreak; at least 17 injuries.

Governor Tate Reeves: "I want to provide an update on the storm that impacted Mississippi last night.

As of now, 17 injuries have been reported. Initial damage assessments indicate:

-275 homes and 50 apartment units are damaged or inaccessible in Lamar County. 30 roads are closed due to debris. The county shelter/safe room is open. American Red Cross support is available. 

-More than 200 homes were damaged in Lincoln County. The Cajun Navy is deploying a 50-person shelter pod, 30KW generator, and 10 pallets of supplies.

-12 homes were damaged in Lawrence County. Multiple roads are closed due to downed trees and power lines.

These numbers are preliminary and will change as damage assessments continue. 

MSEMA is supporting damage and operations assessments. Road clearing teams are being deployed to remove debris and the state is deploying additional resources as requested by local emergency managers.

BREAKING: Two people from Texas were on board the MV Hondius, according to Texas Health and Human Services, Brooke Taylor reports.

The two passengers left the ship and returned to the U.S., before the deadly hantavirus outbreak was identified, according to DSHS.

The two report they don’t have any symptoms and didn’t have any contact with a sick person while aboard the ship. They have agreed to monitor themselves for symptoms with daily temperature checks and contact public health officials at any sign of a possible illness.

“Hantaviruses are usually spread through contact with wild rodent droppings or urine. The strain in the Hondius outbreak, Andes virus, can spread from person to person in limited circumstances. It typically requires close, prolonged contact with a person who is actively sick with the disease. It is not known to spread through casual contact such as shaking hands or being in the same room for a few minutes. There have been no documented cases where a person without symptoms spread it to someone else.”

NEW: Texas DPS and U.S. Border Patrol apprehended six individuals, including a “special interest alien” from China, during a border operation in Roma, South Texas. Those arrested were identified as being in the U.S. illegally and were wearing wristbands used by cartels to track smuggling operations. All were transferred to federal custody as part of Operation Lone Star.
