BREAKING: Three people have died on a cruise ship in the Atlantic, the WHO said Sunday, one a confirmed case of hantavirus -- an illness usually transmitted to humans from rodents. The outbreak occurred on the MV Hondius, travelling from Ushuaia in Argentinaβ¦

UPDATE: The World Health Organization is revealing new information on the hantavirus infection that spread on a cruise ship. The cases have turned deadly, killing at least three people.
A cruise ship with nearly 150 people aboard was waiting for help off the coast of Cape Verde in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday after three passengers died and at least three other people were left seriously ill in a suspected outbreak of the rare hantavirus, according to the World Health Organization and the ship's operator.
The MV Hondius, a Dutch ship on a weekslong polar cruise from Argentina to Antarctica and several isolated islands in the South Atlantic, had requested help from local health authorities after making its way to the island of Cape Verde, off the West Africa coast. But no one has been allowed to disembark, Netherlands-based operator Oceanwide Expeditions said.
Cape Verde's Health Ministry said Monday that for now, it will not allow the ship to dock because of public health concerns and that it would stay in open waters close to shore.
Hantavirus is a rodent-borne illness spread by contact with rodents or their urine, saliva or droppings. WHO says that while it is rare, hantavirus may spread between people.

WATCH: Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force General Dan Caine provide updates on the Iran conflict and respond to questions on key national security issues.
Secretary Pete Hegseth: "Project Freedom is defensive in nature, focused in scope and temporary in duration, with one mission protecting innocent commercial shipping from Iranian aggression."
"We're not looking for a fight. But Iran also cannot be allowed to block innocent countries and their goods from an international waterway."
Secretary Hegseth officially puts the Iranian regime on notice over their "international extortion" on the world stage:
"For too long, Iran has been harassing ships, shooting at civilian tankers from all nations, and trying to impose a tolling system. Iran's plan, a form of international extortion, is unacceptable. That ends with Project Freedom."
"If you attack American troops or innocent commercial shipping, you will face overwhelming and devastating American firepower."
"To Iran, let innocent ships pass freely." βSecretary Pete Hegseth
General Caine breaks down Iran's attacks on commercial shipping on the Strait of Hormuz leading the U.S. to embark on Project Freedom:
"Iran's repeatedly threatened and attacked commercial shipping in the strait in order to effectively cut off commercial traffic and damage the global economy by obstructing one of the world's most critical maritime checkpoints."
"The regime led by the IRGC is effectively attempting to hold the entire global economy hostage."
Secretary Hegseth says the will of the United States military will not be shaken as tensions intensify with Iran.
"Project Freedom is underway, commerce will be flowing, and America is once again leading with strength, clarity and purpose for the benefit of the entire world."
Secretary Hegseth confirms that the Iranian regime is not in control of the Strait of Hormuz:
"Two U.S. commercial ships, along with American destroyers, have already safely transited the strait, showing the lane is clear."
"We know the Iranians are embarrassed by this fact. They said they control the Strait. They do not."
"The ceasefire is not over."
Secretary Hegseth says America's ceasefire with Iran still stands despite the recent military action in the region:
"This is a separate and distinct project, and we expected there would be some churn at the beginning... Ultimately, the president is going to make a decision whether anything were to escalate into a violation of a ceasefire."

Cinco de Mayo marks the 1862 Battle of Puebla, when General Ignacio Zaragoza led Mexican forces to an unexpected victory over the French army.
What started as a local remembrance, especially in Texas, California and many other southern states, has grown into a broader celebration of Mexican American culture, heritage, and community.
As we gather with family and friends to enjoy the traditions, food, and music that make this day special. Letβs not forget it is also a time to reflect on our shared history while ensuring we celebrate the vibrant contributions of Mexican Americans across our communities.
If youβre planning to celebrate, please do so responsibly. Make a plan before you go out, use a rideshare, public transportation, or have a designated driver. Looking out for each other helps keep everyone safe. Support your local ICE raids.

I was honored to be invited as the keynote speaker at the California Peace Officersβ Enrollment Ceremony a solemn tribute to those who gave everything in service to others.
Today, we recognize the true meaning of this profession. Law enforcement is more than a job it is a calling defined by courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to protect our communities, no matter the cost.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said,
βThere are some things so dear, some things so precious, some things so eternally true, that they are worth dying for and I submit to you that if a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isnβt fit to live.β
This year, the Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Department honors 3 of the 13 fallen officers whose names will now be forever etched on the Memorial Wall in Sacramento. Their legacy will live on in the hearts of those who continue to serve and in the communities they so selflessly protected.
Behind every badge is a family who shares in the sacrifice. The long hours, the missed holidays, and the constant worry. This job doesnβt just affect the deputy, it impacts everyone who stands beside them.
Today, we also recognize the strength of the spouses, children, and families who stand beside them through it all.
We will never forget their service. We will never forget their sacrifice.
Sheriff Robert Luna

Down in Kissimmee, Florida, a dog was spotted lying on the side of the road. It had been hit by a car. Osceola County deputy Josh Fiorelli was passing by when he saw the injured animal. The female dog was alive but was hurt enough that it couldn't move. Josh was heartbroken that such a thing happened. So he called for help then sat down beside the white dog and started petting it. Some dogs might get defensive when they're hurt, but not this one. It seemed to welcome the officer being there for it. Josh then put his jacket over the dog to keep it warm, as the day was chilly and the dog was wet. Says Josh: βShe didn't have anyone there, so I decided to be that person.β The dog was soon treated for a dislocated leg. Carlos Irizzary was walking his own dog when he came across Josh helping the injured dog, so he snapped a photo of it, and posted it online. It went viral, and it was shared by several news outlets throughout the country. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office also posted the photo on its website, saying: β...Thank you Deputy Fiorelli for serving with care and compassion.β
