In 1992, Los Angeles exploded into chaos after the acquittal of four LAPD officers caught on tape beating Rodney King. The city burned for six days, and over 60 people lost their lives in what became one of the deadliest urban uprisings in U.S. history.
But while much of the focus was on South Central, another story was unfolding in Koreatown. With police abandoning large parts of the city, many Korean-American business ownersβleft completely on their ownβtook matters into their own hands. Armed with rifles and pistols, they climbed onto their rooftops to defend their stores from looting and arson.
These βRooftop Koreansβ became symbols of self-defense, resilience, and controversy. Some saw them as heroes protecting what theyβd worked so hard to build. Others criticized the vigilante tactics and the systemic neglect that forced them into that position in the first place.
Today, the image of armed Korean shopkeepers on rooftops is burned into the collective memory of Los Angeles. Itβs not just a memeβitβs a reminder of what happens when communities are left behind, and the lengths people will go to protect their own.

Illinois: Police say a McHenry man accused of physically assaulting two children at a baseball game at a church in Wonder Lake fought a responding police officer and injured him while resisting arrest.
Wonder Lake Chief of Police Kyle Mandernack said the call was received on the non-emergency line advising of an incident occurring at the baseball fields during a youth baseball game at the church.
Mandernack said officers attempted to take Stephans into custody for refusing orders and he began resisting arrest and fighting.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Stephans kicked a police sergeant in the back and pinched another officerβs forearm.
An officer was injured and evaluated by the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District but did not require transport to the hospital, Mandernack said.
