South Carolina: A deputy was injured in a head-on collision Saturday night with a suspected impaired driver, according to Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster.

Deputy Will Johnson was on routine patrol in the Jalapa area of Newberry County around 8:30 p.m. when his patrol vehicle was hit head-on by another driver believed to be under the influence, authorities said.

Authorities said that after the impact, Johnson was able to leave his vehicle after being trapped and check on the other driver.

Newberry County Emergency Services and EMS also responded.
Johnson was taken to Newberry Health, where he was examined, treated, and released.

NEW: A Los Angeles police officer and two young children were injured in a crash early Sunday morning in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw area, authorities confirmed.

The collision was reported around 3:23 a.m. near Crenshaw Boulevard and Obama Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officials say the crash involved an LAPD patrol vehicle. One person was arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony DUI, police said.

Two children, a 2-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, were transported to a hospital in fair condition, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. An LAPD officer was also taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Police Officer John Bartholomew was shot and killed by a robbery suspect at Chicago’s Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital at approximately 10:50 a.m.

Around 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Officer Bartholomew and another officer transported a suspect accused of robbing a Family Dollar store to the Swedish hospital for observation. Nearly two hours later, the suspect obtained a gun and fired, striking both officers. The officers were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where Officer Bartholomew was pronounced later that afternoon; the second officer suffered severe injuries.

The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward and is in custody.

Officer Bartholomew had served with the Chicago Police Department for 10 years, assigned to the Albany Park (17th) District.
