LAPD News: Officer-Involved Shooting investigation in the area of the Southbound 5 Freeway offramp near Olympic Boulevard. A PIO is enroute. Media staging is at Olympic Boulevard and Downey Road.

This is preliminary information: On April 8, 2026, around 9:30 a.m., Central Division patrol officers encountered a vehicle wanted for Grand Theft Auto in the area of Towne Ave and 7th Street. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle for further investigation the vehicle fled, and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle exited the southbound 5 Fwy at Olympic Blvd. where it made a U-turn on the off-ramp and crashed into a pursuing police vehicle. The driver exited the vehicle and fired shots at the officers resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and pronounced one suspect, described as a male adult, deceased at scene. The passenger from the suspect vehicle, described as a male adult, was transported to a nearby hospital for non-visible injuries and complaint of pain.

Two officers were also transported to the hospital for evaluation as a safety precaution. The suspect's firearm was recovered at scene and will be booked as evidence. No other officers or community members were injured during this incident.

Force Investigation Division is on scene conducting this OIS investigation.

Video shows a Dad with his young son on bicycles navigating around a homeless encampment on Ventura Blvd located in front of Hope The Mission “The Woodlands” homeless shelter across the street from Taft High School in Woodland Hills.

Remember when leaders promised residents there would be no encampments around the shelters when they were building them? And why do we only see adult working age men in these encampments when the shelter’s website says it’s for “families experiencing homelessness”?

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol  sadly announced the line of duty death of Trooper Vernon Brake.

On April 8, 2026, at 11:27 a.m., a vehicle traveling southbound on I-35 lost control for an unknown reason and crossed the center cable barrier. The vehicle struck Trooper Brake, who was traveling in the northbound lanes just south of Hefner Road in Oklahoma City.

Trooper Brake was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the other involved vehicle, along with a four-year-old passenger, were also pronounced deceased at the scene.

Trooper Brake was a graduate of the 56th OHP Academy in 2006 and has proudly served the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for nearly 20 years, with a significant amount of time assigned to Troop S (commercial motor vehicle enforcement). After his graduation from the academy, he also served in Oklahoma and Logan Counties.

Trooper Brake is survived by his wife and two children.
