UPDATE: At 2:19 PST, US Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop in Portland, Oregon. The passenger of the vehicle and target is a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and involved in a recent shooting in Portland. The vehicle driver is believed to be a member of the vicious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents.

Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene.

This situation is evolving and more information is forthcoming.

The New York State Police sadly announced the line of duty death of retired Sergeant Michael L. Piro at the age of 63.

Sergeant Piro passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, from an illness stemming from his assignment in and around the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Sergeant Piro is the 39th member of the New York State Police who has died from an illness resulting from the 9/11 attacks.

Sergeant Piro retired from the New York State Police on March 26, 2015, after 29 years of dedicated service. He was last assigned to Troop L SP-Riverside.

Sergeant Piro is survived by his four children, Melissa, Jennifer, Michael, and Joseph, and was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia.

Human trafficking along the Figueroa Corridor continues to exploit the most vulnerable in our city. The LAPD and our local, state, federal, and NGO partners remain united in protecting victims, connecting them to services, and dismantling the networks that profit from exploitation.

We’re also reducing demand by targeting the buyers. In 2025, our task force arrested 174 “Johns” and issued more than 500 John Letters to residents — a direct warning that this behavior will not be tolerated in our neighborhoods. With new tools like AB 379, anyone coming to the corridor to purchase sex will face enforcement and public accountability.

There is no place for human trafficking in Los Angeles. The LAPD and its partners will continue to identify and arrest those who exploit others.

Earlier today, I met with officers of the Collin County Sheriff’s Office who were assisted by ICE with serving search and arrest warrants for two illegal aliens from Honduras wanted by the state of Texas for homicide. ICE lodged immigration detainers on the aliens while they remain in the custody of the county pending homicide charges.

When ICE and state/local law enforcement work together, these are the results—public safety threats off our streets. We appreciate our state and local law enforcement partners who work with us to make our communities safer. President Trump promised the American people that we will do just that, and we are not backing down… only ramping up.

Tensions boiled over outside the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday evening, as a large group of anti ICE protesters marching through the area clashed with a smaller group already gathered to protest the Iranian government.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident unfolded around 7pm when the anti ICE demonstrators encountered the existing protesters demonstrating in solidarity with ongoing anti regime unrest in Iran. The two groups quickly turned hostile, with members of the anti ICE crowd attacking one individual, throwing punches, and setting an American flag on fire on the ground.

The smaller group had been stationed at the MDC protesting Iran’s authoritarian regime amid reports of intensified crackdowns on domestic protesters there. The arriving marchers, focused on opposing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, reportedly initiated the physical confrontations.

No immediate reports of arrests or injuries were available.

A Colorado state trooper was injured when a traffic stop turned violent on I-76 near Sable. A driver of a BMW refused to exit the vehicle, became combative, and hit one of the troopers before fleeing. The injured trooper attempted pursuit but crashed due to weather and speed.

The trooper was taken to the hospital for evaluation of his injuries. The second trooper drove himself to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
