Sex Offender Eats Pavement When He Tries to Run from Florida Deputies
FLAGLER COUNTY, FL β The Flagler County Sheriffβs Office reported that deputies made two arrests and recovered a missing juvenile following a traffic stop and subsequent pursuit in western Flagler County on Dec. 31, an incident that escalated into violence and resulted in injuries to deputies and damage to patrol vehicles.
According to the sheriffβs office, deputies initiated a traffic stop on a white Ford F-150 traveling along U.S. Highway 1 after receiving a report of suspicious activity. During the stop, deputies identified the driver as 60-year-old Darnell Hairston of Hastings. Two juvenile passengers were also inside the vehicle. Deputies determined that one of the juveniles was a missing child who had been reported missing in neighboring St. Johns County.
As deputies conducted interviews at the scene, the missing juvenile was placed inside a patrol vehicle for safety. Authorities said that while the investigation was ongoing, Hairston fled the scene on foot. During the attempt to detain him, deputies said Hairston became physically combative and attempted to grab a deputyβs firearm during a struggle.
Hairston was taken into custody and charged with resisting an officer with violence and attempting to deprive a law enforcement officer of a firearm. The sheriffβs office said Hairston is also a registered sexual offender who had previously served a 12-year prison sentence for false imprisonment, along with other charges.
While deputies were dealing with Hairston, the second juvenile passenger, identified as 15-year-old Junior Bishop of Hastings, entered the truck and fled the scene in the vehicle. Authorities said Bishop nearly struck a deputy as he drove away.
Deputies initiated a pursuit as Bishop drove southbound on U.S. Highway 1 before turning westbound onto State Road 100. According to the sheriffβs office, the pursuit quickly became dangerous as Bishop drove into oncoming traffic, creating a serious risk to deputies and the public.
The pursuit ended when Bishop crashed the truck into a sheriffβs patrol vehicle. The collision caused both vehicles to veer off the roadway into the wood line, where they rolled over. The sheriffβs office said the crash resulted in minor injuries to two deputies. Both deputies were transported to AdventHealth Palm Coast, where they were treated and later released.
Please join us in sending prayers and, or positive thoughts for their recoveryππ»
Authorities said Bishop did not suffer any injuries during the crash or arrest. He was taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated fleeing and eluding, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, driving without a license, and resisting arrest without violence.
The missing juvenile was recovered safely during the incident and was not reported to be injured.
Following their arrests, both Hairston and Bishop were transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. According to the sheriffβs office, Hairston is being held without bond pending his first appearance before a judge. Bishop will be processed through the detention facility and then turned over to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice after booking.
