Sergeant Al Lopez suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to assist other deputies who were involved in a high speed pursuit in Compton at approximately 5:20 am.

Shortly after he responded from the station a citizen came into the lobby and advised deputies that a patrol car had crashed at the intersection of Myrrh Street and Willowbrook Avenue and the driver was unresponsive. Deputies responded to location and began performing CPR on on Sergeant Lopez. He was transported St. Francis Medical Center where he passed away.

It is believed that Sergeant Lopez suffered a fatal heart attack prior to his vehicle colliding with a fence at low speeds. The pursuit he was responding to was terminated shortly after it began due to the dangerously high speeds of the fleeing vehicle.

Sergeant Lopez had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 26 years and was assigned to the Compton Station. He is survived by his wife and two adult children.

When the Cartersville Police Department notified APD about a suspect who threatened to “shoot up” the airport. Sergeant Jones, Officer  Banks, and Officer Gibson (not pictured), sprang into action canvassing the area, issuing a BOLO, locating and detaining the suspect near the checkpoint area, and then securing the perimeter, and a rifle was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle and cleared.

Because of your collaboration, professionalism, and swift work, airport operations were resumed safely with no ongoing threat to the public.

California Highway Patrol

Earlier this week, an SPD K9 Officer spotted a stolen SacRT Flex vehicle in the area of El Camino Avenue and Howe Avenue. When the officer attempted to  stop the vehicle, the suspect fled, leading officers on a short  pursuit.

The  pursuit ended near Auburn Boulevard and Fulton Avenue after the suspect collided with other vehicles. The suspect then tried to run, but officers quickly gave chase and took him into custody.

Thanks  to the quick work of our officers and the assistance of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was safely apprehended.

Another great example of teamwork and dedication to keeping our community safe.

NEW: At least four people were shot near Howard University Friday night, D.C. Fire and EMS says.

The shooting comes as the school is holding homecoming celebrations.

According to officials, the shooting happened in the 2300 block of Georgia Avenue near Howard Place. 

At this time, police say one person is in serious condition and one is in critical condition. 

The conditions of the other two victims are not yet known. 

Police have not provided any information on a possible shooter.

North Carolina: CMPD, family members and witnesses tell WSOCTV's Joseph Andrade targeted strangers in a deadly crime spree across Charlotte Thursday.

Police say Andrade shot and killed Justin Carlton. Carlton's mom tells Hunter that her son did not know Andrade and that he was "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Carlton's mom says Andrade shot and killed Carlton before stealing his car and then crashing it. This happened near Hoskins Avenue and Black Street. A second victim, who hasn't been identified, was also shot.

Neighbors say after Andrade crashed Carlton's car, he stole another car but shortly later crashed it into a home under construction. Surveillance video captured Andrade sprinting away from the scene and turning on to Cloudman Steet where police say he broke into a home, kidnapped a woman and stole her SUV.

The Oklahoma Fraternal Order of Police and El Reno Police confirm El Reno Sgt. Thomas Duran passed away tonight, one week after he was hit by a car while helping a pedestrian. Duran was an organ donor, and the organ donation process has begun.

The FOP President says: “We trust that Thomas is being held in the loving arms of his Savior… he will be missed and honored for his sacrifice and bravery. In the days ahead, we will celebrate Thomas’ life and the way he served those in need. Today, though, we mourn the loss of a father, husband, family member, friend and brother in blue. We mourn with the family and community of El Reno. The entire law enforcement and FOP family mourns the loss of a hero. A man who lived and left this world as he always had: serving sacrificially and giving others the gift of life, as was his wish.”
