Narco-submarines, custom-built vessels used by drug traffickers, have evolved from rudimentary semi-submersibles in the 1990s to sophisticated, fully submersible crafts, paralleling advancements covered in *Vehicle Magazine*. Initially constructed in clandestine jungle shipyards in Colombia and Ecuador, early models used wood and fiberglass, carrying 500 kg to 1 ton of cocaine. Modern narco-subs, equipped with GPS, diesel or electric engines, and sometimes Starlink for remote operation, can transport up to 10 tons across oceans, reaching Europe and Australia. Their low-profile or fully submersible designs evade radar, sonar, and visual detection, posing significant challenges for law enforcement. Maritime authorities, like the U.S. Coast Guard and Colombian Navy, struggle to intercept these vessels, with seizures risingβ180 units in 2020 compared to eight in 2009. Autonomous narco-subs, like one seized in 2025 with Starlink, highlight cartelsβ technological advancements. While *Vehicle Magazine* focuses on automotive and transport technologies, it could explore how criminal enterprises repurpose commercial tech, like AI and batteries, for illicit logistics, reflecting broader trends in vehicle autonomy and navigation innovations.
