A week ago today, off-duty NYPD police officer Jay Pena was heading home from his shift at the 84th Precinct. He was traveling westbound on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway about 10 minutes from his home, when a box truck driver collided into his motorcycle near the Atlantic Ave exit. The officer was fatally thrown from the motorcycle, which kept going along the highway until it struck a wall and bursted into flames.

The suspect behind the wheel of the truck fled the scene and was arrested later that evening. He was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, operating an unregistered vehicle and driving with no license plate. According to prosecutors at the arraignment, the driver stopped several yards away from the crash site to dislodge pieces of the motorcycle from under the truck. Witnesses stated the driver “observed Pena’s body on the ground and then drove off from the location”.

Officer Jay Pena joined the NYPD in February of 2021 and graduated from the academy at the top of his class. He was assigned to the midnight tour at the 84th Precinct in downtown Brooklyn. Officer Pena leaves behind both parents and his 18-year-old brother; whom he always strived to be a role model for. Jay was remembered as a free spirit who loved skateboarding and riding bikes as a kid before getting into riding motorcycles later in life. He was also a beloved fixture at the Glory Martial Arts Center in Bay Ridge. Jay had recently gone to Mexico for scuba diving training and was aiming to become a member of the NYPD’s Harbor Unit. Officer Pena was 30-years old and was laid to rest today.

The radicals in Sacramento are at it again. This time with AB 1231.

So, let’s talk about this bill.

-First it’s titled “The Safer Communities Through Opportunities Act.” Who would be against that? Nobody. But, anytime the radicals in CA place “Safer” in their bill or proposition, it is rarely “Safer.” It is meant to trick you. It is meant to illicit empathy.

-Second, who is against thoughtful diversion programs and rehabilitation? Nobody. But here are some of the crimes included in this bill:

Felony Child Abuse

Felony Corporal Injury to Child

Felony Assault Likely to Cause Great Bodily Injury

Felony False Imprisonment

Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Felon

Felony Purchasing sex from a minor who is 16 or 17-yrs-old

Felony Second degree burglary

Felony Looting

Felony Maintaining a drug house

Felony Poss of Meth, PCP or Fentanyl for sale

(These “non-violent” crimes are just some of the crimes included in this bill).

And, what does this bill do? It allows a judge to give someone charged with the above crimes-release from custody, diversion program, no punishment, charge fully dismissed after diversion program completed, no probation, the likelihood of no victim restitution, and the likelihood of no victim protective order. How is that “safer?”

Just like the disasters we have seen with “mental health diversion,” this bill risks public safety, weakens victim protections, and endangers our families, children and communities.

The Sacramento radicals are so pro-criminal, so anti-punishment, that they are willing to endanger all of us by trying to say this bill is safer for communities and gives people opportunities. It’s dangerous. And it actually gives people “opportunities” to reoffend and hurt another victim.

Tell your assembly person and state senator to vote “NO” on this bill and tell Newsom to veto this bill if passed by the radicals.

Criminals should not get priority over victims, children, families and the safety of all of us.

Nebraska: A Lincoln police officer was injured in an explosion on Thursday morning.

One person was cited after a police officer was injured in an explosion under a west Lincoln bridge Thursday morning.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue along with the Lincoln Police Department responded to an area underneath the West O Street bridge near North 1st Street around 7 a.m.

LPD said transients had a fire going, when there was an explosion. Fire investigators are still investigating what caused the explosion.

One police officer was injured in the explosion, suffering burnt skin, hair and pain, according to police. They said the injuries were minor and the officer was not taken to the hospital.
