UPDATE: Three Chicago police officers and two suspects were hospitalized Wednesday morning after officers intervened in an attempted burglary in a freight train yard in Englewood, authorities said.

Just after 5 a.m., officers were alerted to several people trying to burglarize a freight train car in the 5800 block of South Shields Avenue, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department.

As the officers approached, one of the suspects accelerated an SUV toward them, striking one. The other officers tried to shoot the driver, but they missed, police said.

The driver soon crashed into a marked CPD squad car and was taken into custody. Two guns were recovered in the vehicle, according to CPD.

Another vehicle, a van, was seen fleeing the shooting and later found by police near 71st Street and Yale Avenue. The driver of that van attempted to flee, police said, but crashed into two more squad cars.

A 30-year-old man who was in the van tried to run off, police said, but was struck by another passing vehicle and taken to a hospital in critical condition. No charges in the case were immediately announced and it was not immediately clear if anyone was struck by gunfire.

The officer struck by the SUV, the other suspect and two other officers were all taken to nearby hospitals. None of their injuries were considered life-threatening.

Coincidentally, those who work within the Diocese had school safety training just yesterday.

"On behalf of Bishop Gerald Kicanas and the Catholic Schools Department, we stand in prayerful solidarity with the children, families, and staff of Annunciation Catholic School in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul & Minneapolis in Minnesota, who have been profoundly impacted by this tragic event.  We ask you to continue to pray with us for an end to school shootings and healing for those affected by these senseless acts of violence.

The safety and wellbeing of our Catholic school students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority.  We are deeply grateful for the opportunity we had to come together yesterday to strengthen our commitment to school safety.  We encourage all pastors and principals to actively apply the insights and strategies shared during our training with Aron Aragon from Gallagher.
