Miracle of the cornfield! Hero pilot safely belly-lands a flaming Russian jet carrying 233 people on farmland after a flock of birds got sucked into both engines during take-off. โ๏ธ๐ฑ #fuck_lucky
Ural Airlines Flight U1678 was taking off from Moscow's Zhukovsky airport at 6.10am local time bound for Simferopol, Crimea, Russia, when it suffered a double bird strike, causing one engine to burst into flames and the other to stop working. Captain Damir Yusupov, 41, radioed the airport asking to make an emergency landing but was forced to ditch into a cornfield a mile away after realising he was not going to make it. Yusupov brought the plane down with no power in either engine and with the landing gear retracted. In total, 23 of the 226 passengers and seven crew on board were sent to hospital for minor injuries, though only one - a 69-year-old woman - required further treatment. โ๏ธ

Jupiter was in a gigantic head-on collision with a 'protoplanet' 4.5 billion years ago when it was still forming - and the gas giant completely absorbed the other world. That's the theory of scientists who've studied the planet's history using data from NASA's Juno space probe. They believe this collision with the planet - roughly the mass of ten Earths - explains its mysterious gassy inner-core. 'Models of such a scenario lead to an internal structure that is consistent with a diluted core, persisting over billions of years,' they say in their study, which was published in the journal, Nature. If their theory is correct, it sheds new light on the solar system's tumultuous formation. ๐ฅ #science

Pakistan said today three of its soldiers were killed in a cross-border exchange of fire in the contested Kashmir region, but India denied that five of its own troops died as well. The Pakistan military claimed it shot five Indian troops in retaliation for the deaths of three of their own soldiers. Major General Asif Ghafoor, spokesman of Pakistan armed forces, tweeted that its three soldiers had died along with five of India's when Indian forces opened fire along the contested border known as the Line of Control (LOC). 'Intermittent exchange of fire continues', Ghafoor said. But an Indian army spokesman denied suffering any casualties, adding: 'No casualties. This assertion is wrong.'
Photos showing off the inside of a Russian nuclear submarine, the largest in active service in the world, have been released, with the huge ship being the inspiration behind the sub from the classic Sean Connery movie The Hunt for Red October. Images show crew members working on the Typhoon-class sub, also known as an Akula, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine belonging to the Russian Navy. The sub appears to be the Dmitriy Donskoi, which entered into active service in 1982 and, after the decommissioning and scrapping of its Typhoon sister boats, became the largest submarine in the world. The Dmitriy Donskoi joined the Russian Northern Fleetโs anti-submarine warfare drills in July, shortly before the new photos were released. #WOW
Gibraltar has released an impounded Iranian oil tanker in defiance of a last-ditch legal attempt by the US to block its release today. Lawyers for the US Department of Justice had tried to stop the Grace 1, which was seized by the Royal Marines last month, being released by filing papers requesting legal assistance to stop the tanker setting sail. The Trump administration is enforcing sanctions designed to stop Iranian oil exports in an effort to squeeze the regime in Tehran - and it wanted to keep the Grace 1 impounded as part of those sanctions. But the Grace 1 was seized under EU sanctions because it was taking its cargo to Syria, and today Gibraltar's Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said he was happy for the ship to be liberated on written assurances from Tehran that it would not travel to Syria.
