The Illinois State Police sadly announced the death of K9 Bane, the loyal partner of Trooper Carrie Arvidson. After a remarkable career spanning 7 years with the Illinois State Police, Bane passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 8.

You may remember back in May when two of our detention deputies, Deputy Jacob Mar and Lt. Brandon McCaslin were violently attacked and stabbed by an inmate, convicted murderer, John Anthony Cole. 

This attack sent both deputies to the hospital, Mar to ICU with life threatening injuries.  We’re happy to report that both deputies have since recovered and returned to work. 

We would like to thank our community and our county for the overwhelming support our deputies have received.  Thank you to so many, including the Angel Care Project and literally people and organization from all across the United States. We very much appreciate you, appreciating us. 

The men and women who work in our detention centers have one of the most dangerous jobs in law enforcement.  It takes a dedicated and courageous person to place themselves between our citizens and those who choose to harm them. 

The people of Sebastian County are fortunate to have just enough people who choose to do just that by working in our detention centers. 

Again, we appreciate our detention staff, and we appreciate you for acknowledging their sacrifice.

Please, pray for the two Pennsylvania State troopers who were shot in the line of duty this morning.🙏🏻

Pennsylvania state police are investigating the incident that saw two state troopers shot in Northeastern Susquehanna County on Route 171. 

The public is asked to avoid the area of the incident, located on Route 171, approximately five miles north of the town of Thompson.

The troopers were both transported to local hospitals.

An update on their conditions will be provided once available, according to PSP.

NEW: Two people are dead after a helicopter crashed into a barge on the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois.

Authorities are investigating a fatal helicopter crash that occurred near the Melvin Price Lock and Dam in Alton, Illinois, on the morning of August 7, 2025.

Around 11 a.m., a helicopter working on power line maintenance struck a line and crashed onto a barge in the Mississippi River, bursting into flames on impact. Both people on board the helicopter were killed. No one on the barge or in the surrounding area was injured.

The barge involved was carrying ethylene glycol, a chemical commonly found in antifreeze. Although the fire posed a serious hazard, emergency crews were able to contain and extinguish it within an hour.

First responders from across Illinois and Missouri, including fire departments and water rescue teams, rushed to the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are now leading the investigation into what caused the crash.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting that occurred in Southwest Division.

On July 5, 2025, at around 3:45 p.m., Southwest Area uniformed Gang Enforcement Detail officers were conducting patrol along the Western Avenue corridor near Martin Luther King Park. Officers observed the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Ernesto Sepulveda, riding a bicycle north on the sidewalk. The officers believed that Sepulveda possessed a handgun and initiated a pedestrian stop on the 3900 block of South Western Avenue.

During the stop, Sepulveda suddenly fled from the officers. During the foot pursuit Sepulveda removed a pistol from his waistband and fired at the officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved-Shooting. One officer was struck in the legs by gunfire. Sepulveda continued to flee south on Western Avenue and fired an additional round at backup officers. Sepulveda experienced a malfunction with his firearm and discarded the weapon, before fleeing farther into MLK Park. Responding officers continued to pursue Sepulveda on foot and a Non-Categorical Use of Force occurred when Sepulveda was taken into custody.

The officer injured by gunfire was transported to a local hospital where he received treatment for gunshot wounds to his legs and a graze wound to his cheek. The officer remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Sepulveda was transported to a local hospital for a laceration to his head. He was treated and cleared by medical staff for booking.

No other officers or community members were injured during this incident.

A black steel, 9mm, Polymer 80, Ghost Gun, loaded magazine, and discharged cartridge cases were recovered at scene and booked as evidence.

NEW: ICE ERO Boston arrested Jonathan Gutierrez, an illegal Guatemalan alien in Cranston, RI.  Gutierrez has a conviction for possession of child pornography and a pending charge for sex offender registration violation. Gutierrez will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
