Liberals hammered moderates and centrists swung at left-wingers on Wednesday as Democrats debating on America’s biggest political stage exchanged friendly fire. The hotly anticipated clashes between former Vice President Joe Biden and California Senator Kamala Harris materialized (center), but so did smackdowns and clap-backs involving more than half of the 10 presidential contenders on stage. Healthcare, criminal justice reform, trade policy, gender equality and other hot buttons drew fire to the front-runner and the rival who famously flogged him a month ago over racial desegregation and forced busing. The second collection of would-be presidents spent more than two hours stripping the bark off of each other with so much energy that attacking President Donald Trump was a relative afterthought.

During a call with Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, President Trump offered to help Russia combat the wildfires currently raging across Siberia, the Kremlin has revealed. In the call between the leaders - which took place during the first night of the Democratic debates - Trump is said to have offered Russia emergency assistance to help stem the blaze which has now engulfed in excess of 7 million acres of Siberian woodland. Putin expressed his thanks to the president for the 'kind gesture' but said for the moment such assistance wouldn’t be necessary. Trump was told that a fleet Russian military aircraft have been deployed to extinguish the blaze, but Putin would take Trump up on the offer if additional support is needed at a later time.

A regional gas pipeline ruptured early Thursday in Kentucky, causing a massive explosion that killed one person and hospitalized five others. The explosion, which sent a massive fireball into the sky which could be seen for miles, destroyed railroad tracks and forced the evacuation of a nearby mobile home park, authorities said. The incident occurred at 1.30 am local time in Moreland, a community about 40 miles south of Lexington, on a natural gas pipeline operated by the firm Enbridge Inc, the company said in a statement. 🔥
Former Amazon software engineer, Paige Thompson (inset), 33, who is accused of a massive hack of Capital One data recently threatened to 'shoot up' a California social media company, federal authorities said. Thompson was arrested Monday in Seattle during an FBI raid on her home. The FBI said she obtained personal information from more than 100 million Capital One credit applications. There is no evidence the data was sold or distributed to others. Thompson's housemate, Park Quan, was also arrested after agents said they found 20 illegally possessed weapons in his room, including assault-style rifles. In a Wednesday court filing, federal authorities also accused Thompson of threatening to 'shoot up' an unidentified California social media company. They said the company reported the threat and that Seattle police had made a report about it.

Two suspected serial killers may have been spotted in Canada. A tip was received that Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, (seen inset) were in the York Landing, Manitoba, area. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Manitoba tweeted: 'Multiple RCMP resources…
Canadian authorities have been searching for Kam McLeod, 19, (top left inset) and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, (top right inset) from Vancouver Island since the bodies of Lucas Fowler, 23, and Chynna Deese, 24, were discovered in Liard Hot Springs last month. An unidentified body was found in McLeod and Schmegelsk’s truck, which had been set on fire, three days later on July 18 in Dease Lake. In the past two weeks, they have travelled more than across Canada and were spotted driving a grey Toyota RAV 4 in northern Saskatchewan on July 23. That model burnt-out car was later found near the town of Gillam, Manitoba which went into lockdown after two men were seen foraging for food. They have since been spotted more than 120miles away in Ontario province, driving through a construction site on Highway 11 about 10.30am Wednesday.
One woman begged for mercy and another sobbed uncontrollably as Indonesia's arch-conservative Aceh province flogged 11 people for getting too close to members of the opposite sex. The six men and five women were rounded up by religious officers who caught them behaving amorously in public, a crime under local Islamic law. Dozens watched as the humiliated victims were whipped by a hooded member of the Sharia police (left) outside a mosque in the provincial capital Banda Aceh. Despite widespread criticism, public whipping is a common punishment for a range of offences in the deeply conservative region at the tip of Sumatra island, including gambling, drinking alcohol, and having gay sex or relations outside of marriage.

Angry bear is released from captivity. The 22-year-old bear had been captured and locked up after for breaking into chicken coups in the Whitefish Mountains, Montana, at night. Wildlife biologists believed that he may have been the same bear which recently killed a mountain biker. But tests of the grizzly's microchip and DNA found that he was not responsible for the deadly human attack and warranted his release. 🐻
North Korea has bragged of testing a new rocket system which Kim Jong-un said will be 'an inescapable distress to the forces becoming a fat target of the weapon.' State-run media said the North's latest test-launch, which took place Wednesday, was of a 'newly-developed large-calibre multiple launch guided rocket system'. The Hermit Kingdom said the weapon 'will play a main role in ground military operations' and boasted that it was combat-ready. North Korea released images of the new weapon, but delayed them in an unusual move while they pixellated the ground launcher in an apparent attempt to hide its exact specifications. 🚀

Nasa's planet spotting telescope has uncovered another three planets, which scientists say include the first nearby super-Earth spotted by TESS that could be habitable. The planet, called GJ 357 d, orbits a star around 31 light years away in the so-called habitable zone, an area far enough from its star to not be too hot but close enough to not be too cold. In this region, it is possible for liquid water to exist on the surface of a planet if it is rocky, although further research is needed to work out whether GJ 357 d's atmosphere is dense and warm enough to host liquid water. The news comes just days after three new planets were found in a star system just 73 light years away from Earth — including two planets that may be 'missing links' in planetary formation.
