Huntington Beach Clarifies That a DHS Report Mistakenly Lists HB as Sanctuary City.
On May 29, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mistakenly included Huntington Beach on a list of more than 500 sanctuary jurisdictions β this designation does not reflect the city councilβs formally adopted policy.
In January 2025, the City Council formally passed a Resolution declaring the City of Huntington Beach a non-sanctuary city. That Resolution remains unchanged and in full effect. No subsequent Council action has changed the cityβs designation.
βWe adopted a formal policy on this. It went before the council, and we unanimously agreed that Huntington Beach is not a sanctuary city. We took deliberate action to make our non-sanctuary stance clear,β said Mayor Pat Burns.
Burns said the DHS list is either a misprint or a serious mistake, and he has already reached out to his federal contacts to have the error corrected.
βIβve done plenty of media interviews on this β there should be no confusion whatsoever that we are a non-sanctuary city,β he said.
Mayor Burns also noted that other jurisdictions have raised similar concerns about being misidentified on the DHS list. βWeβre hearing there are other local governments that are also misidentified, including Baltimore, Maryland; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Shasta County, California β all of which have either declared themselves non-sanctuary jurisdictions or follow non-sanctuary policies,β he said.
By contrast, Mayor Burns said Santa Ana is the only city in Orange County that has publicly identified as a sanctuary city, and the City recently advanced a policy to provide public alerts related to ICE activity β yet, he noted, that city is not on the list.
Mayor Burns said he is confident the DHS error will be corrected promptly.

SPOG (Seattle Police Officers Guild) understands we will once again get blamed, and more calls will be heard for more accountability. This is Seattleβs public safety political reality.β
