Illinois: A Rock Island police officer suffered injuries while attempting to keep someone from stealing his squad during an arrest.

The officer was attempting to detain an 18-year-old man Monday afternoon in the area of 19th Street and 6th Avenue when the incident occurred, according to a Rock Island Police Department news release. As the officer struggled with the man, a 16-year-old teen got into the squad and tried to drive away.

The officer, who was not identified in the release, tried to stop the teenager and was dragged through a parking lot and fell from the vehicle.

The squad was a K-9 unit and the dog was in the kennel built into the vehicle at the time, but there were no firearms inside the squad, the release states.

The officer suffered injuries, but has since been treated and released from an area hospital.

The police vehicle, with the K-9 still in it, was recovered in Davenport. The K-9 was uninjured.

Virginia: An Arlington County police officer is recovering from serious injuries suffered during a traffic stop early Saturday.

The officer had stopped a car on the 1600 block of S. Eads Street in Crystal City when he was struck by a passing driver who then fled the scene, according to ACPD.

The officer has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, the department said.

NEW: Dozens of people were detained after officers discovered what they described as an "underground casino" in Van Nuys.

Colorado: A man is facing attempted homicide and arson charges after authorities say he intentionally set an explosion at a home in Monument that sent five law enforcement officials to the hospital.

Sheriff's deputies and Monument police officers responded to a family disturbance involving Miguel Borja, 24, at 5:22 p.m. Saturday at 42 Front St., according to the Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said Borja tried to set someone on fire and barricaded himself inside the home. Law enforcement officials evacuated the residence but could smell "the strong odor of gas."

An explosion occurred when two officers and three deputies tried to enter the home. All five were taken to a hospital, where they were treated and released.
