BREAKING OVERNIGHT: A Suffolk County NY police officer suffered knife wounds Tuesday morning while attempting to make an arrest in Amityville.

Around 12:26 a.m., a 911 caller reported two males looking into parked vehicles on Gibbs Road near Coolidge Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene and placed one of the men in custody, while the other fled on foot, police said.

When officers found him nearby, he swung a knife, striking one officer in the leg and chin. Officers then disarmed and arrested the male.

Police did not identify the two men and did not specify if the officer was stabbed or slashed.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Charges are pending for the two men, police said.
