DEPUTY NELSON HENRY YAMAMOTO
End of Watch: Tuesday, March 31, 1992

On March 29, 1992, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Nelson Yamamoto was fatally shot during a gun battle in Walnut Park while responding to a call of an armed suspects menacing a resident. Despite being on training, Deputy Yamamoto bravely engaged in the shootout but was struck multiple times by a .357 magnum. He was rushed to Martin Luther King Hospital, where he underwent surgery and received 25 pints of blood. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries two days later, with subsequent findings revealing that medical errors contributed to his death.

The suspect who shot Deputy Yamamoto was identified as an illegal immigrant wanted for multiple murders in El Salvador and North Hollywood. He fled the scene and escaped the state. The manhunt for the fugitive gained national attention, including a feature on America’s Most Wanted. Less than a week later, a New York farmer recognized the suspect from the broadcast and alerted authorities. FBI agents, New York state troopers, and local officers tracked him to a farm in Plattekill. During the confrontation, the suspect attempted to flee but was fatally shot by troopers, who believed he was reaching for a weapon.

On May 20, 1992, in honor of Deputy Yamamoto’s sacrifice, the city of Lynwood renamed Enterprise Place to Deputy Yamamoto Place, located near the Lynwood Regional Justice Center and Century Sheriff’s Station, which replaced Firestone Station in 1994. Though decades have passed, Deputy Yamamoto’s bravery and dedication to service have not been forgotten—he is deeply missed by his family, colleagues, and the community he served.

The cause of his death is still undetermined, though it is confirmed it was not due to any incident with police. Responding officers rendered aid by applying a tourniquet and he was transported to the hospital, where later died.
