A surge in the number of sexually transmitted infections has gripped the US military, sparking fears over troops 'readiness' for combat. A shocking report published by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch found that chlamydia infections, the most common, spiked 56 per cent over the last six years to infect 225 troops per 10,000. The number of gonorrhea cases also shot up 56 per cent for men and 33 per cent for women over the last six years to more than 30 cases per 10,000, while syphilis cases more than tripled from 2 to 6 cases per 10,000. The emerging crisis led a military doctor to warn that the disease could impact performance on the battlefield and undermine the military's health. #facepalm
