Reversing the front element of Helios 44-2 lens takes a couple minutes and results in extremely soft, ethereal, almost underwater pictures. Definitely going to explore this style further.

Now I feel like one of those Hasselblad influencers, haha :-)

Gooi Heathlands

Every August ’t Gooi turns purple for a few weeks, and then it stops. Half the province walks through the heather with a phone in hand. By late September the fields go rust brown again. They are not wilderness at all, but a very old mistake that everybody decided to keep. The Goois Natuurreservaat calls it “illusielandschap”.

I published a new photo series and an article in my Journal about the place. This is a second piece in what I hope becomes a longer run of Dutch landscape work, after Soestduinen.

I found a use for “failed” Polaroid shots that didn't go to the photo album. I stick them to the walls in my studio with washi tape. Those are still memories good enough to preserve.

Solar Eclipse 2026

On 12 August the moon covered 88% of the sun over the Netherlands. It was the largest eclipse seen from here since 1999, and the next comparable one will be only in 2081.

I watched it from an open field in the Goois Natuurreservaat not far from my house, with a camera, a telephoto lens, a folding chair, and a solar filter that arrived exactly 1 day before the eclipse. Most of the evening I sat there alone, listening to insects in the heather. Closer to the maximum a few families turned up next to me and I passed my solar glasses around.

Take a look at all the sun’s phases and read about my experience of shooting the eclipse!

World Pride March 2026

Amsterdam hosted World Pride for the first time this year, and I photographed the closing event: the WorldPride March on Saturday 8 August. It set off from President Kennedylaan at 16:30 and ended at Museumplein just after 18:15, with thousands of people walking through Amsterdam Zuid in between.

It was more a demonstration than a parade. Participants carried flags of countries where homosexuality is still criminalized. Alongside those, rainbow flags of every size, a few of them several meters long, and signs that people kept holding up so I could photograph the text.

It was the easiest crowd I have ever worked with. Nobody minded the camera, and it was not only the community out there. Allies, friends, entire families with kids walked the route. Check it out!

Today is my final Duolingo streak mark. To be honest, I am tired of doing it and I don’t get any Dutch language knowledge from it for a long time already. It’s time to let it go.

This is how Otis looks at me through a window every time I leave my house.
