FHP had a great time on Saturday at the Cape Kennedy Corvette Club Toy Run, hosted by the Brevard Sheriff. Our FHP Corvette, also known as the bestlookingcruiser in the country, led a parade of more than 240 Corvettes as they delivered toys, food, and gift cards to support local children, families, and school programs in Brevard County.

OFF-DUTY LEXINGTON NC POLICE OFFICER KILLED IN SHOOTING

It is with a heavy heart that we share the details of a horrific tragedy. A little after 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, off-duty Lexington Police Officer Kaitlin Crook was shot and killed.

Lexington Police Chief Robby Rummage has asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) to lead the investigation. While the investigation is ongoing and there are many things we don’t know yet, we want to be as transparent as possible while respecting the investigation.

Last night, Lexington Police responded to 911 calls about shots fired. First responders arrived a short time later and began life-saving measures, but tragically, Officer Crook was pronounced dead at the scene. Two men were also found with gunshot wounds:
• Zachary Rogers: An off-duty Lexington Firefighter and the estranged husband of Officer Crook. He is in critical condition at the hospital. A handgun believed to be his was recovered at the scene.
• Joshua Moore: A resident of Thomasville, NC. We believe Mr. Moore was Officer Crook’s current boyfriend. He is in stable condition at the hospital and is expected to recover. A handgun believed to be his was also recovered at the scene.

Neither Officer Crook nor Zachary Rogers were on-duty at the time. All three people knew each other, and we don’t believe anyone else was involved. We won’t know anything else for certain until the NCSBI investigation is complete.

“There are no words that can adequately capture the weight of what so many people are feeling during this terrible and devastating time,” said Lexington Police Chief Robby D. Rummage. “Losing a police officer is every chief’s worst nightmare. My heart is heavy, and my prayers are with everyone touched by this tragedy. We will continue to lean on one another, in support of each other, and get through this together.”

“This incident is a profound tragedy that deeply affects the public safety family in the City of Lexington as well as all City employees, the Lexington community and beyond,” said Lexington Fire Chief Michael R. Tofano. “Our hearts are heavy with grief.”

Both the Lexington Police Department and the Lexington Fire Department have made counseling and support available to their employees.

We simply have to wait for the NCSBI investigation to answer remaining questions. We ask for the community's prayers and patience during this difficult time.🙏🏻
