*The cynics couldn't be wronger about America.*

Constantly, I hear other young people talking about like America like it's beyond fixing. The system is broken, the chips are completely stacked against us, and there's nothing we can do. While I understand the widespread dismay about the 2 party system and the US's economic system, I think it's profoundly lacking in perspective. For hundreds of generations before us, people lived as peasants and serfs and slaves and other underlings, under the jackboot of cruel, unaccountable rulers, with nonsensical ideologies beyond reproach and in economic conditions unimaginable to most of us. They toiled and struggled for thousands of years, for little more than the reward of living long enough to marry and sire children who would take care of them when they grew old. Our ancestors saw the barbarism of this system, and they pleaded with the British crown to escape it. When all other options were exhausted, they fought and shed blood and died in a seven year guerilla war, all so their children could grow up in a better world than they did. This nascent democracy was still saddled with the extreme cruelty of hierarchical social structures it inherited from the British Empire. Political activists spent their lifetimes writing, legislating, protesting, and at times, fighting violently against the overwhelming majority support for slavery until their kinder morals took hold. This change gave way to direct confrontation between state governments, culminating in a brutal, four year war against the slave-owning class. Millions of soldiers fought to overthrow the social institution of slavery, and hundreds of thousands died. Our forefathers fought so we would have the power to make society better without having to lay down our own lives for it. History calls on us not to die face-down in the mud like they did, but to fight like hell through the electoral process we've been given. Our democracy is flawed sixteen ways to sunday, but the value of that ability for regular people to unseat elected officials just by signing some pieces of paper cannot be overstated. WE CAN overcome the forces of stagnation in the Democratic Party. WE CAN overcome the forces of regression in the Republican Party. WE CAN become the generation to set America back on the path of progress. And if we can't rise to that challenge, then everything the boomers said about us was right. Merry Christmas, everyone. submitted by /u/No_Discount_6028 to r/GenZ [link] [comments]
