Eating outside one's home has become something of an American art form. With so many options, fares, ambiances and price points to choose from, if you live anywhere but the most remote of areas you could probably dine out every day of the week somewhere different and never get bored. According to the most recent consumer-spending report, people spent 0.2% less in October — a noteworthy change compared with September's 0.7% rise. You could be cutting back on expenses everywhere, but nice-to-have options like your fine-dining budget might be among the first to go. In 2022 food prices jumped 10.4% overall. It's too early to see how much food prices might jump in 2023 since we've still got just under a month to round out the year, but the figure isn't expected to decline much, if at all. Data from the most recent Consumer Price Index show that the prices of many goods and services are higher. Here's how different items changed in price over the past 12 months:Food: up 3.3%Food at home: up 2.1%Food away from home: up 5.4%Energy: down 4.5%Electricity: up 2.4%New vehicles: up 1.9%Apparel: up 2.6%Medical care commodities: up 4.7%Shelter: up 6.7%Transportation services: up 9.2% But for people who still enjoy dining out without pomp and circumstance, chain restaurants like fast-food shops, cafes, fast casuals and even drive-thrus might provide affordable options. It's a lot easier to ballpark the cost of your chicken cobb salad at a well-known chain than at the brand-new mom-and-pop restaurant down the road. And with the rise of social media and Google and other social reviews, chains know they need to work that much harder to gain consumers' trust as they watch their wallets more closely. Study: the best-reputed chain restaurants A study conducted by SOCI, the San Diego marketing platform, used artificial intelligence to gather data from online reviews, questions, and other metrics to evaluate how chain restaurants' reputations stack up against their peers. It then ranked each chain on a scale of 100. The top rated casual dining restaurants are: Cheesecake Factory: 75Olive Garden: 74Outback Steakhouse: 64Applebee's: 60California Pizza Kitchen: 58Buffalo Wild Wings: 58Denny's: 58Chili's Grill & Bar: 58Full-service rated higher than quick-service One notable trend SOCI's study revealed was that full-service dining (think: sit-down) scored higher on average than quick-service restaurants (fast food). The average full-service dining score measured 65, whereas the average quick-service restaurant scored just 45. Interestingly, in a separate study SOCI conducted in 2023, fast-food chain Chick-fil-A scored the highest fast-food reputation, coming in at 66 on a scale of 100. The big takeaway here is that prospective diners read reviews, and they matter, even for a brand that already seems like a household name. "A restaurant's online reputation, therefore, has a profound impact on its success and its local visibility — how prominently it features in local search results and the likelihood it gets discovered by potential customers," SOCI's chief marketing officer, Monica Ho, said in a statement. DURKIN: I’m J.D. Durkin - reporting from the New York Stock Exchange. Stocks were in the green to close out today's session. The Dow closed up, the Nasdaq closed up, and the S&P closed up. This optimism comes as investors cheer positive retail sales data after November showed unexpected growth, emphasizing the strength of the U.S. consumer. Investors are also holding out hope that the Fed could avoid triggering a recession after it unveiled plans to lower interest rates in 2024. Turning to the housing market - mortgage rates have fallen back below 7% for the first time since August. Rates have now dropped for the seventh consecutive week and now stand at 6.95%. And, according to Freddie Mac, rates may drop even further, with its chief economist saying, “Given inflation continues to decelerate and the Federal Reserve Board’s current expectations that they will lower the federal funds target rate next year, we likely will see a gradual thawing of the housing market in the new year.” And, as you might expect, with rates continuing to drop, mortgage applications are on the rise. Applications have now risen for the sixth consecutive week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. But, while rates are nowhere near their August high of 7.79%, rates are still higher than they were at this time last year when they stood at 6.31%. That’ll do it for your daily briefing. Naomi Hahn, VP of Strategy at Skyscanner joined TheStreet to discuss this growing trend as well as how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the industry.Full Video Transcript Below: J.D. DURKIN: Does your data tell you much I wonder about people booking elsewhere, looking to the United States as a destination that could be New York. Or you have some people who may say, hey, I'd love to get out and not necessarily be in a crowded city. Is there an interest in the American Southwest or areas like that? NAOMI HAHN: So I don't know. I'm trying to think if you've got anything specific on that. What we are seeing, there's an interesting trend that I think persisted from last year, which was last year. You had people going on a lot of solo travel, which was to do with well-being and space. Linked to that you had a lot of people not doing the city stuff but wanting to go and reconnect with nature. And this year the trend we're seeing is sleep destination, sleep. I know. And I'm like, I get it when I go on holiday. I want to sleep too. But the number one activity that came through in the research was that 33% of people said the first thing that they wanted to do on holiday, the most important thing was sleeping. So this is the whole thing around kind of combining holidays with experience, but also recuperation, which is quite an interesting move. J.D. DURKIN: Talk to us a little bit about the role that AI is playing when it comes to making travel plans for 2024. NAOMI HAHN: Yeah, so AI has always been a big part of what Skyscanner does. So in terms of machine learning and using data intelligently to be able to crunch 80 billion different prices every day, to be able to serve them to travelers so they can decipher them and figure out what's right for them. So AI has always been important. As we go into next year, we're finding that travelers are proactively searching for generative AI suggestions for where they should be going on holiday. And I think I don't remember the specific stat, but there's a high number of Americans who have actually actively used generative AI to search for things on their mobile phones. And they're the highest they were the highest out of the whole globe that we interviewed. So it was America who were trending more towards using that. And the great thing about generative AI is that they can identify different sources of information and pull them together really, really quickly. For a consumer like you or I to say, well, what's it actually going to be like in that destination? Or if I want to go somewhere where I can see Taylor Swift I can get a good night's sleep and I can go to a Michelin star restaurant that isn't going to break the bank like this can all come back to you.

Cadillac, one of the first auto brands in the world, was only a few years old. General Motors (GM) - Get Free Report acquired Cadillac in 1909 and the company moved on to other catchy--and less lethal--lines like "the Standard of the World," "More Eloquent than Words," and "In a realm of its own." Now Cadillac, which was named after the French explorer who founded Detroit, is taking another step into the realm of electric vehicles. The company revealed the Vistiq on Dec. 14, a three-row crossover SUV that the company says will be available during the 2026 model year. This is Cadillac’s fifth EV and the third this year as the company moves forward with its plan to going all-electric by 2030.NEWS: GM released photos of a new EV they are releasing in 2025 called the Vistiq.It's an all-electric three-row SUV that will sit between the Lyriq and soon-to-come Escalade IQ. General Motors (GM) - Get Free Report acquired Cadillac in 1909 and the company moved on to other catchy--and less lethal--lines like "the Standard of the World," "More Eloquent than Words," and "In a realm of its own." Now Cadillac, which was named after the French explorer who founded Detroit, is taking another step into the realm of electric vehicles. The company revealed the Vistiq on Dec. 14, a three-row crossover SUV that the company says will be available during the 2026 model year. GM didn't release any specs. pic.twitter.com/GOfu0Ja98o— Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt) December 14, 2023 For the moment, Cadillac is playing it close to the vest as far as pricing, availability and other details, but published reports pointed to a price tag of $70,000–$90,000, depending on the trim level and list of options.Covering luxury SUV segments The Vistiq will be based on GM's Ultium electric infrastructure that is being deployed for battery electric vehicles from General Motors portfolio brands along with vehicles from Honda HMC and Acura. “Our brand now has an EV entry in most luxury segments, offering customers a range of choices, and Cadillac EVs will cover most luxury SUV segments across critical global markets in the next two years,” John Roth, vice president of Global Cadillac, said in a statement. Earlier this year, Cadillac revealed the 2025 Escalade IQ, the brand’s first all-electric full-size SUV. Last month, Cadillac confirmed the 2025 Optiq, which will act as the entry point for the brand’s EV lineup in North America. GM also has the Celestiq, a hand-built electric sedan.
