FDA approves the country's first gene-editing treatment
TheStreet's J.D. Durkin brings the latest business headlines from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as markets open for trading Friday, December 8th.Full Video Transcript Below: J.D. DURKIN: I’m J.D. Durkin, reporting from the New York Stock Exchange. It’s been a packed week as investors digest labor market and inflation data. Investors are feeling hopeful that the relatively strong labor market, falling inflation, and improved consumer sentiment could suggest the Federal Reserve may avoid a recession. Next week, investors will be looking ahead to more inflation data and the central bank’s interest rate decision. This will mark the final move on interest rates in 2023. In other news, the Food and Drug Administration has approved the country's first gene-editing drug. Casgevy (Kass-Jevy), produced by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics, will be used to treat those with sickle cell disease. Sickle cell causes a dysfunctional form of hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen to the blood and turns red blood cells into a crescent shape. It affects about 100,000 people in the U.S. and an estimated 20 million people worldwide. Using CRISPR’s Nobel Prize-winning technology, Casgevy allows a person’s DNA to be edited to turn on fetal hemoglobin, which normally shuts off after birth. This helps the red blood cells remain in their healthy, full moon-shaped state. The new treatment has been approved for people 12 years and older. However, it takes months to complete, has certain risks, and does not come cheap. Vertex says it will charge $2.2 million per patient and will likely not be covered by all health insurance providers. That’ll do it for your daily briefing. From the New York Stock Exchange, I’m J.D. Durkin with TheStreet.

*Sam's Club makes major upcoming store closure announcement*
As the holidays near, many of us are busy booking travel to visit loved ones and carefully planning recipes down to the teaspoon for holiday baking parties. We often take for granted, in the midst of such a busy season, that many of our favorite retail stores stay open to accommodate our schedules and provide that nutmeg we could've sworn we had in the cabinet. Related: Customers might abandon fast food for this cheap-meal alternative Many large retailers, including Walmart (WMT) - Get Free Report and Costco (COST) - Get Free Report won over their impressively large customer base by keeping long hours and remaining reliable in a pinch, even during holidays. But life after 2020 has changed that. During the height of the pandemic, grocery stores, strip malls, haircutters, bakeries, and even multinational big box retailers suddenly shuttered. And now that everything has reopened, retailers are more sensitive not just to the safety and well being of their customers but also to their employees. And some retailers aren't going back to their old ways. Sam's Club announces a holiday adjustment Customers may recall that Walmart, which owns Sam's Club, announced it would close down on Thanksgiving 2023. "I am delighted to share that once again, we'll be closing our doors for Thanksgiving this year," CEO John Furner announced in October. "Thanksgiving is such a special day during a very busy season. We want you to spend that day at home with family and loved ones." Customers shop at a Sam's Club store in Beijing, China, June 25, 2022. (Photo: CFOTO/Future Publishing via Getty Images) Future Publishing/Getty Images The decision was Walmart's fourth consecutive Thanksgiving closure, and now, Sam's Club is following in a similar path for this Christmas. It will hold what it's calling Holiday Shopping Hours and Special Hours during the holiday season. Sam's Club Holiday Shopping Hours are:Nov. 22-Dec. 23Monday-Sunday: Open until 8 PM Sam's Club Special Hours are: Christmas Eve, Dec. 24: Open until 6 PMNew Year’s Eve, Dec. 31: Open until 6 PM Sam's Club will close its approximately 600 stores on Christmas Day. Similarly, Walmart will shutter its nearly 4,500 stores and Target's 2,000 will close. Grocery stores like Kroger (KR) - Get Free Report, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's will also be closed to observe the holiday. To be clear, this isn't a TROS/Sequel Trilogy hate post. I do actually like the ST despite it's flaws (same can be said for every SW trilogy to be fair). But this final battle is incredibly stupid. The Rebels land on General Pryde's Star Destroyer and stage a pitched battle with their space horses. Pryde then sends out a battalion of Stormtroopers to counter-attack. The battle is obviously intended by JJ to look cool and cinematic. However, this ignores a fundamental question. As a Star Destroyer is a spaceship with three dimensional maneuverability, and with its own internal gravity, why doesn't Pryde simply rotate the ship 90 degrees to the left? This would result in the rebels and their space horses simply sliding off the edge of the ship, killing them all. Seems like something an experienced general would have though of. I know that SW movies often have dumb logic and plot armour for its heroes but this one gets me scratching my head every time. To me this is the dumbest moment in the movie. submitted by /u/TheRealSpaldy to r/StarWars [link] [comments]
