Key analyst calls rental car giant's Tesla dump a miscalculation

Rental car giant Hertz (HTZ) - Get Free Report is reducing its electric vehicle fleet by about a third, with plans to sell around 20,000 EVs, including Teslas, throughout the year. The move comes on the heels of a year that saw record levels of EV adoption amid cooling consumer demand, and just a few years after Hertz announced plans to purchase 100,000 EVs from Tesla, 175,000 from General Motors (GM) - Get Free Report and 65,000 from Polestar. The rental car company — which before planned to have EVs account for 25% of its global fleets — said that it plans to reinvest proceeds from the EV sales into gas-powered cars. Related: New report indicates alarming trend for electric vehicle enthusiasts "It's really to respond to the reality, which is we're trying to bring supply in line with demand," CEO Stephen Scherr told CNBC. "This is about the numbers, it's about the financial performance and the operational integrity of the business." Scherr said in the wake of the extreme EV price cuts led last year by Tesla, Hertz's own Teslas have depreciated in value more quickly. "That's obviously a cost to the business. We need to face that reality," he said. Hertz said in a filing that the sales will add around $245 million in depreciation expenses to its fourth-quarter earnings. Before the sales began, EVs made up 11% of Hertz's fleet. The company expects the reduction in EVs to lower its operational expenses and depreciation costs, driving up to $300 million in incremental free cash flow aggregated over 2024 and 2025. It's not yet," Scherr said. Shares of Hertz fell following the announcement, tumbling another 4.9% by midday Friday. Shares of Tesla (TSLA) - Get Free Report likewise fell, falling another 4% by midday Friday. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said the move represented more of a problem for Hertz than for Tesla. "It's a black eye for Hertz, not for Tesla. I think they clearly miscalculated in terms of the way it's going to play out," Ives told CNBC. " I don't view it as much of a negative for Tesla; I think the way Hertz went about it, from the marketing of the vehicle to the distribution was a disaster." But now, Southwest Airlines (LUV) - Get Free Report seems to have taken a step toward making up for it with an offer that is available now.Related: Carnival Cruise Line offers key warning for all cruise passengers The airline's program for earning points, Rapid Rewards, allows members to use points they earn by traveling with the airline and by spending with its partners. The points can be used for flights, hotels, car rentals and for merchandise such as gift cards. But in November, Southwest announced that it was devaluing those points at the beginning of 2024 by raising points per dollar by about 4%. "This is potentially a generous promotion, especially given that many people can probably rebook travel to take advantage of this," wrote Ben Schlappig of One Mile At a Time. "Personally I value this offer at an incremental 6-14% return." The Southwest promotion looks to be a rewarding one for travelers that move quickly on it. Schlappig offered four examples:"Rapid Rewards members ordinarily earn 12x points on Business Select fares, so will now earn 24x points.""Rapid Rewards members ordinarily earn 10x points on Anytime fares, so will now earn 20x points.""Rapid Rewards members ordinarily earn 8x points on Wanna Get Away Plus fares, so will now earn 16x points.""Rapid Rewards members ordinarily earn 5x points on Wanna Get Away fares, so will now earn 10x points." The promotion does not include credit card rewards that can be earned by using them for airfare, which could add up to even more savings. "Southwest Rapid Rewards is a revenue based frequent flyer program, and personally I value these points at ~1.2 cents each," Schlappig wrote. "So by my valuation, you’re getting an incremental 6-14% return on your spending with this promotion. That’s a pretty substantial bonus."Some history behind Southwest's points offerings This positive development comes after a few years of Rapid Rewards changes that are important for context. In 2021, Southwest had devalued points during the pandemic after it allowed its customers to convert travel credits to points. The airline also gave points to passengers after its operational meltdown during the 2022 holiday season. The airline had been forced to cancel a large number of its flights during the historically busy weeks for travel because of the system failure that caused massive disruptions for travelers. The meltdown was blamed on outdated computer systems that had a difficult time handling an increase in bookings. The cancelations had a cascading effect and passengers were stranded at airports across the country. Many lost their luggage and had a difficult time recovering it. Since then, Southwest Airlines has implemented steps to prevent repeating the fiasco. The 2023 holiday season, while not without a few unfortunate incidents, was very much improved by comparison.
