JP Morgan hits record high as 2024 forecast offsets FDIC-lead earnings miss

Updated at 9:41 AM EST JPMorgan Chase (JPM) - Get Free Report shares jumped to a fresh record high Friday after the world's fifth-largest bank forecast solid net interest income gains that offset a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter report. JPMorgan said earnings for the three months ended in December were $9.3 billion, or $3.06 a share, down 14.3% from the year-earlier period and well shy of the Wall Street consensus forecast of $3.32 per share. 'Special Assessment' hurts JP Morgan profit JPMorgan's $3 billion 'Special Assessment' payout to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, tied to the spring rescue of several regional banks, however, trimmed 74 cents from its overall bottom line, which would have otherwise topped Wall Street forecasts. JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon speaks at the UK Global Investment Summit at Hampton Court Palace in London on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023. Bloomberg/Getty Images Reported revenue, JPMorgan said, rose 8.4% to $38.57 billion, again missing analysts' estimates of a $39.78 billion tally. Managed revenue, however, were up 12.3% at $39.94 billion, topping Wall Street forecasts. JP Morgan is the fifth largest bank in the world, with a market value of around $492 billion and around $3.2 trillion in assets under its umbrella. Net interest income also impressed, rising 19% to a record $24.2 billion a result of the higher-interest-rate environment, offsetting a slump in global dealmaking fees amid a dearth of new listings and takeovers so far this year. The bank said it sees NII rising to just over $90 billion this year, a tally that will likely top its overall expenses target. Merger activity slumped to the lowest levels in a decade last year, with overall volumes down 18% from 2022 levels, according to LSEG data, with around $3 trillion in deals completed. In the U.S. overall deals fell 8% to around $1.42 trillion.Dimon: Economy resilient, geopolitics prompts caution "The U.S. economy continues to be resilient, with consumers still spending, and markets currently expect a soft landing. It is important to note that the economy is being fueled by large amounts of government deficit spending and past stimulus," said CEO Jamie Dimon. "There is also an ongoing need for increased spending due to the green economy, the restructuring of global supply chains, higher military spending and rising health care costs," he added. "This may lead inflation to be stickier and rates to be higher than markets expect," he added. "And the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have the potential to disrupt energy and food markets, migration, and military and economic relationships, in addition to their dreadful human cost," Dimon said. "These significant and somewhat unprecedented forces cause us to remain cautious." Dimon, who has led the bank since 2006, is one of the most respected men in global finance and was once considered as a possible Democratic candidate for president. JP Morgan shares were marked 2.4% higher in early Friday trading immediately following the earnings release to change hands at $174.33 each. The shares hit a fresh record high of $176.31 each earlier in the session.Get investment guidance from trusted portfolio managers without the management fees. Sign up for Action Alerts PLUS now.

Tesla stock slides on Berlin factory closures, more China EV price cuts

Updated at 9:56 a.m. EST Tesla (TSLA) - Get Free Report shares slumped lower in early Friday trading following another round of EV price cuts in China and reports that it would suspend production at its new Berlin factory after supply disruptions linked to attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Tesla confirmed a Reuters report that its Berlin factory, which opened last year, would suspend operations from Jan. 29 to Feb. 11 as key components from shipments through the Red Sea, which feeds into the Suez Canal, remain targets of Houthi rebels in Yemen. Map of the Red Sea region Shutterstock-Below the Sky US, UK coordinate attacks against Houthis The U.S. and the U.K. carried out coordinated military attacks on the Iran-backed rebels on Friday, with President Joe Biden saying in a statement that he will not tolerate "attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation." "The armed conflicts in the Red Sea and the associated shifts in transport routes between Europe and Asia via the Cape of Good Hope are also having an impact on production in Gruenheide," Tesla said in a statement. "The considerably longer transportation times are creating a gap in supply chains." Tesla is also cutting the price of its new Model 3 sedan in China by around 6%, to 245,900 yuan ($34,600), with a near 3% reduction in the price of its Model Y sport utility EV. *Delta says international travel is back in a big way and it expects trend to continue in 2024*

TheStreet's J.D. Durkin brings the latest business headlines from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as markets open for trading Friday, January 12.Full Video Transcript Below: J.D. DURKIN: I'm J.D. Durkin, reporting from the New York Stock Exchange. Here's what we're watching on TheStreet today. Investors are digesting a better-than-expected inflation report – wholesale prices fell 0.1 percent in December, below analysts' expectations of a 0.1 percent increase. This is an encouraging sign as the Fed attempts to bring inflation back down to earth. Investors are also reacting to the start of earnings season. JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Citigroup all reported disappointing fourth-quarter earnings. Bank earnings are typically closely watched by Wall Street to determine the health of the U.S. economy. In other news - if it seems like everyone is traveling abroad except you, you could have a point. In its earnings, Delta’s fourth-quarter income more than doubled from 2022, largely thanks to a steep increase in international travel. Delta said international travel was 25 percent higher than the same reporting period in 2022 and expects the trend to continue. And the airline is putting its money where its mouth is, announcing a plan to buy 20 Airbus A350-1000 long-range jets and options to buy 20 more. This comes as the Boeing 737 MAX 9 remains grounded during an ongoing FAA investigation of Boeing’s part in an incident that saw Alaska Airlines experience a mid-flight blowout of a door plug. Delta, which operates both Airbus and Boeing jets, says the investigation has nothing to do with its decision to build out its Airbus fleet. In an interview, Delta CEO Ed Bastian said Boeing needs to do well - quote β€œIt’s a great company. It’s an important company to our country and our industry.” That’ll do it for your daily briefing. From the New York Stock Exchange, I’m J.D. Durkin with TheStreet.

*CVS makes a major change that Target shoppers will hate*

Despite the rise of online shopping, where almost anything can be delivered to your door in hours, many of us still go in person to do at least some of our chores. One such effort is a visit to the pharmacy, whether that's because a signature or ID is required to pick up a prescription or simply because you like doing it. Related: Walmart makes major change affecting millions of customers If you're lucky to be close enough to one of the more than 1,000 Target (TGT) - Get Free Report locations that include a CVS pharmacy located inside, and you happen to enjoy shopping, then you're really in business. In 2015 Target and CVS (CVS) - Get Free Report agreed to a venture under which CVS would operate a majority of the retailer's in-store pharmacies. The deal, valued at around $1.9 billion at the time, enabled CVS to take over business in some 1,800 locations. (Target currently has just under 2,000 U.S. locations.) The agreement largely was a delight for customers. It suddenly became easy to fill a prescription while picking up birthday-party supplies, a Starbucks mocha frappuccino, dog food, trail mix, a new book, office furniture, and maybe even a new sundress. More Retail:Walmart makes major change affecting millions of customersTarget shoppers suddenly buying up common $7 itemTrader Joe's is discontinuing these beloved items in 2024 This was the kind of one-stop shopping that was supposed to take over the world. Gone were the days of circling multiple strip malls for a parking space and having to queue up just to pick up a staple. Target, which offers groceries in many locations, was now also a pharmacy, and life was suddenly a lot simpler. Change coming to some CVS Target locations In late 2021, however, CVS said it would be shuttering hundreds of locations across the country as less profitable stores cut into its outlook. A CVS logo is displayed at one of its stores near Bloomsburg, Pa., on Aug. 18, 2022. (Photo by Paul Weaver/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images) SOPA Images/Getty Images "The company has been evaluating changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs to ensure it has the right kinds of stores in the right locations for consumers and for the business," the company said at the time. "As part of this initiative, CVS Health will reduce store density in certain locations and close approximately 300 stores a year for the next three years." As of September 2023, CVS said it would close a total of 900 stores by 2024. CVS closures aim to boost profit, efficiency The most recent Target decision likely results from the ongoing closure efforts, which are intended to shore up profit and efficiency. Still, the closures represent a small fraction of the pharmacies that will continue to operate within Target, and all employees affected by the closure are expected to transfer to locations that will remain open. CVS is far from the only drugstore shoring up profits and locations following the pandemic. In June 2023, Walgreens (WBA) - Get Free Report said it would close as many as 450 locations across the U.S. and U.K. to streamline and simplify its business. RiteAid (RAD) - Get Free Report filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023.
