*What is the most shocking moment you have seen in a documentary?*
The one that immediately comes to mind for me is in Midnight Family when you see one of paramedics working chest compressions and you see a small toddler's hand weakly reach up towards him, the collective gasp from the crowd after realizing he was working on a baby was shocking! Also, Bob Flanagan being filmed in the hospital at the end of “Sick” was super sad. What is the most shocking scene you can recall? submitted by /u/McSteezeMuffin to r/movies [link] [comments]

*United Airlines solves a huge holiday problem for its customers*
Everyone has opened a holiday gift and tried to keep a straight face to not betray how terrible the present was. Maybe it was an inconsiderate gift, a lazy one, or a gift from a family member who does not realize that your adult interests may not be the same ones you had as a child. In most cases, as long as you don't openly gasp, a bad gift can be returned. That, of course, might lead to store credit at a retailer you may not choose to shop at, but that's better than whatever your family, friend, or coworker bought you in the first place.Related: United Airlines insists on one rule many passengers don't like Gift cards, however, are a little trickier. They generally can't be returned and, in many cases, they're to a store the gift receiver assumes they will visit at some point. Even non-coffee drinkers visit Starbucks and you might not be a regular at whatever mall-based chain you got a gift card for, but that doesn't mean you won't visit to use your free money. The problem is that billions of gift cards go unused every year. United Airlines (UAL) - Get Free Report has an interesting solution for consumers who find themselves with gift cards that they don't want or may not use. Starbucks has hundreds of millions in unused gift cards every year. Image source: TheStreet United Airlines wants your gift cards A number of third-party exhanges allow people to sell gift cards or may even buy them (albeit for less than face value). Gift cards can, of course, be regifted, but none of those are attractive solutions. United Airlines, however, has a solution called the MileagePlus Gift Card Exchange. The airline describes its offer on its website: "Exchange your gift cards for MileagePlus award miles." It's a fairly simple three-step process: Select the retailer for which you have a gift card (the airlines accepts over retailers' gift cards).Enter the gift card information so United can convert it into Mileage Plus award miles.Accept the offer and have the miles deposited into your account. "You'll be able to preview the amount of award miles offered for your gift cards before submitting them for an exchange," according to the airline. "You'll receive the full value remaining on your gift card in award miles." The airline has not shared the formula it will use for the conversions. "The amount of award miles offered in exchange for the gift card varies and includes a 7.5% federal excise tax," the airline added. No other major U.S. airline offers a similar program. How big is the gift card problem? Billions of dollars in gift cards go unused every year. That's partially because people don't use the entire balance and then forget about them and at least parly from cards that never get used at all. "Nearly half (47%) of U.S. adults have at least one unused gift card, gift voucher or store credit, according to a recent Bankrate study. "Those gift cards aren’t small change: The average value is $187 per person — a total value of $23 billion nationwide." Gift cards are big business for retailers who offer them (and not just because some won't get used. "61% of consumers spend more than a gift card’s value when redeeming, for an average of $31.75 more than the card’s value," according to a report from Capital One. Gift cards, a $339.5 billion business in the U.S., has also been growing steadily at 8.2% per year. "Nearly 50% of consumers purchase gift cards because they are convenient," according to the Capital One study. "54% of U.S. consumers buy gift cards as holiday gifts."

*Now's the perfect time for several personal finance steps*
With a new year approaching, now may be a good time to make sure that everything is up to snuff with your personal finances. Here are four areas you might look at:Cash Holdings You want to make sure you are maximizing your earnings on excess cash. You can garner 5% or more in a money-market fund and as much as 4.6% in a bank savings account. If you have a lot of money in a checking account that earns zero or close to it, you should think about closing or substantially reducing that account. If you have an investment account with a brokerage firm, you can often write checks on a money-market fund there.Review Your Budget Make sure your spending isn’t out of line with your income. Ideally, you want to be able to save money every month. Put some of your spending habits under the microscope. Do you really need a fancy coffee every day? Are you buying more clothes than you’re wearing regularly? Are you paying for entertainment subscriptions, such as streaming services, that you don’t even use? Are you eating out more than once a week?Emergency Savings A rule of thumb has it that you should stash away at least six months’ worth of spending, in case you face an emergency such as a job loss or illness. A job loss, of course, means less income. And an illness likely means more spending – and perhaps less income too, if being sick keeps you out of work. You can stick the money in a money-market fund or a high-yield savings account. That way you can earn something on the reserve while having instant access.Retirement Savings Make sure you are maximizing here. You can save for retirement tax-free, with an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) that you establish for yourself and/or a 401(k) account that many companies offer their workers. There are two kinds of IRAs – traditional and Roth. You can research the differences in detail on the Internet. The maximum IRA contribution for 2024 is $7,000 for those under age 50 and $8,000 for the rest of us. Companies often match some of their employees’ 401(k) contributions. That’s free money, so try to take advantage of it.

*AITA for starting my car at 4am to go to work*
My neighbor keeps leaving notes on my car claiming my car is loud and wakes him or her up in the morning. I have to wake up at 3:30am leave my house by 4am because I start work extremely early. Every morning I get in my car turn it on and leave so that said neighbor doesn’t keep complaining but it clearly isn’t enough for them. I’ve lived at the same address for 4 years never had any one complaint until now. The neighbor who wants to remain anonymous has left 3 notes on my car and even went to the extend of mailing me a letter. It almost feels like I’m being harassed as the notes are not nice and say some pretty nasty things on them. Unless this said neighbor is willing to pay my first 3-4 hours of work so I can leave when it’s convenient for them I don’t know what else to do. Am I the asshole? … Edit: 2020 ram 1500 not modified also a few months back I would leave for work at 6am and it was also an issue for them. submitted by /u/HorrorDifficult9655 to r/TwoHotTakes [link] [comments]

*I made dinner for us and then see this note when I went for a midnight snack ?*
I literally make meals for us at least 9x a week despite us both working the same hours. She never makes food. I am legit the main one who does the dishes because I’m typically feeding the both of us. She gets fast food majority of the time and never does them. She doesn’t have to worry about them because she’s always eating out when I don’t cook for us, but due to the dishes technically being “my fault,” they have to be done within the hour according to her Tl;dr: my roommates expects me to do dishes within the hour even tho she never even cooks anything submitted by /u/Mangagirll to r/badroommates [link] [comments]
