*More retailers are charging return fees: Here's why*
TheStreet's J.D. Durkin brings the latest business headlines from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as markets open for trading Wednesday, December 27th.Full Video Transcript Below: J.D. DURKIN: Iβm J.D. Durkin - reporting from the New York Stock Exchange. Hereβs what weβre watching on TheStreet today. Stocks are coming off yet another winning session on Wall Street as markets continue the βSanta Claus Rally,β a time when stocks typically outperform. All three major averages are looking to close out the year in positive territory β¦ the Dow is looking to end the year up 13 percent, the S&P up 24 percent, and the Nasdaq up 44 percent. The S&P 500 is only 22 points away from closing at a new all-time high. Investors are particularly optimistic as they look ahead to eventual interest rate cuts. Markets are currently pricing in an over 70 percent chance of a rate cut in March. Meanwhile, if youβre looking to return your Christmas gift, you may want to double-check the fine print. Research shows that the days of unlimited free returns could be behind us, as more and more companies start to charge for mail-in returns. According to βHappy Returns,β a logistics company that specializes in returns, 81 percent of merchants are charging a fee to send back items. And itβs not just the small companies β¦ names like Abercrombie, Zara, J.Crew, H&M, and Macyβs have all added fees for mail-in returns, with some charging up to $7. But this doesn't come as much of a surprise β¦ analysts estimate that companies are losing roughly 50 percent of their margin on returns, once you factor in the cost of selling the item and processing the return. Thatβll do it for your daily briefing. From the New York Stock Exchange, Iβm J.D. Durkin with TheStreet.

*Owner of miserable sports franchise rejects fans' plea to sell team*
There may not be a more dire sports franchise right now than the Detroit Pistons. A loss to the Brooklyn Nets the day after Christmas extended the Pistons' losing streak to 27 games, the longest in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The previous record of 26 straight losses was jointly held by the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers and 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers. As it stands, the Pistons are 2-28, winning just 6.7% of its games so far, on pace to smash the lowest win percentage in NBA history that belongs to the 2011-12 Charlotte Bobcats team that won just 10.6% of its games. What makes the Pistons situation even more bleak is that the team has been horrendous for quite a while. It has finished with a bottom five record in the NBA in each of the last five seasons. The positive side of a slew of bad season is that it tends to result in a top draft selection, and this season was gearing up to be a showcase of the potential of some of the Pistons' young studs.Related: Mark Cuban's Dallas Mavericks sale may be 'red flag' for the NBA, one major sports media personality says The team signed Monty Williams to a then-record six-year, $78.5 million deal to be its head coach. Williams provided hope on the sidelines considering he was just two years removed from carrying a Phoenix Suns team out from the doldrums of the league to the NBA Finals. But all the optimism has led to this point: The 2023-24 Detroit are one of the worst teams in the history of the NBA. The historic losing has led fans to begin calling for ownership to sell the team. The team is owned by Tom Gores, owner of private equity firm Platinum Equity. Gores and his firm purchased the team in 2011 for $325 million, and his investment has grown nearly 1000% in just over a decade as the team is now worth $3.08 billion according to Forbes. But Gores' leadership has not produced success on the court. Since Gore took over in 2011, the team has only made the playoffs two times, squeezing in both times as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference before easily being ousted in the first round. The Pistons haven't won a playoff series since 2008. In a video call after the team's 25th straight loss on Thursday, Gores addressed the media about the state of the team. Like many of the fans, he admitted that he had a positive outlook entering the season, but now knows that change needs to be made. "I was very optimistic at the beginning of the season about what this team could do and felt that it had a bright future. I still feel that way. But, do we need to change some things? Absolutely," Gores said.Related: Stephen A. Smith tops major executives and more in sports media power list He added that he thinks deserves the blame to "some level" for the situation, and that his general manager, Troy Weaver, does as well. "If you want to shoulder it on anyone, itβs on me and Troy. We made these decisions. What you donβt see right now, what the fans donβt see, is the cleaning up of everything. Weβre in the most flexible time during my ownership with the Pistons. In terms of how weβre not performing and so on, I think it has to go on Troy and I. It starts there," Gores said. But when asked about the fans pleas to sell the team, Gores pushed back vehemently. "They can say what they want, but thatβs ridiculous," Gores said. "Other than winning β and we should win more games β we do a lot in the community. Players, the organization, we do a lot in the community. If you put aside winning, weβve made a very big difference in the community. That means a lot to me ... I understand the fans being upset, but itβs a ridiculous thought." Despite Gores' rejection, the fans still continued their plea during the team's record-breaking defeat on Tuesday.Deafening βsell the teamβ chants

*United Airlines insists on one rule many passengers don't like*
Airline passengers working their way through the traveling process are often looking to make the sometimes difficult experience as enjoyable as possible. But United Airlines (UAL) - Get Free Report has one policy that is an inconvenience for many flyers β and there is a simple reason why.Related: Southwest passengers experienced a particularly terrifying situation mid-flight First, on a larger scale, it's important to note that United is a founding member of Star Alliance, a global aviation partnership. The alliance allows passengers to fly on multiple airlines on partner flights, making international travel easier by providing more route options with global airlines. Star Alliance currently has 26 member airlines. Travel expert Ben Schlappig explained one major benefit of these partnerships on One Mile At a Time. "One of the great things about ... global airline alliances is that they offer reciprocal lounge access for travelers," Schlappig wrote. "I wanted to take a closer look at the Star Allianceβs lounge access policy for travelers, as understanding the nuances of airport lounge access can be complicated." Schlappig illustrated an important point to understand about lounge access with Star Alliance. "As a general rule of thumb, you can expect that you'll get lounge access with Star Alliance either if you have Star Alliance Gold elite status, or if youβre traveling in first or business class," he wrote. "That doesn't consistently apply within the United States (when traveling on United)." A United Airlines aircraft is seen flying above clouds. Image source: Shutterstock United Airlines does it differently There is a distinction to be made about lounge access when flying in the U.S. as opposed to internationally. "U.S. airlines tend to get in the way of the alliance 'groove' when it comes to lounge access," Schlappig wrote. "Thatβs because within the United States you generally don't get lounge access just for flying domestic first class, or on account of having elite status. Rather, U.S. airlines try to sell lounge memberships." Specifically for travelers on United, this can be an inconvenience. But the experience is not unique to United. It's basically just a symptom of how things are typically done in the U.S. regarding lounge access. "A first or business class ticket within the United States on United generally won't get you lounge access, with the exception of a limited number of premium routes," Schlappig clarified. "Star Alliance Gold members through United MileagePlus don't get United Club access when traveling within the United States on United; however, Star Alliance Gold members who earn status through a program other than United MileagePlus can access United Clubs when traveling domestically."How to by a United Club membership Travelers can purchase United Club memberships with miles or cash. Here's the cost breakdown: General member: $650 or 85,000 miles Premier Silver: $650 or 85,000 miles Premier Gold: $650 or 85,000 miles Premier Platinum: $650 or 85,000 miles Premier 1K: $550 or 75,000 miles United Global Services: $550 or 75,000 miles "With this you're paying anywhere from $550 to $650 annually, depending on your status," Schlappig wrote. "If you are going to buy a United Club membership, I'd highly recommend paying cash over redeeming miles. As you can see, you're getting under 0.8 cents of value per MileagePlus mile this way, and thatβs just a really bad value." It's basically just a symptom of how things are typically done in the U.S. regarding lounge access. United Airlines insists on one rule many passengers don't like
Airline passengers working their way through the traveling process are often looking to make the sometimes difficult experience as enjoyable as possible. "U.S. airlines tend to get in the way of the alliance 'groove' when it comes to lounge access," Schlappig wrote. *Iovance plunges as FDA halts lung-cancer-drug trial after patient death*
Iovance Biotherapeutics (IOVA) - Get Free Report shares fell sharply in Wednesday trading after it said the Food and Drug Administration put a key lung-cancer-drug trial on hold following the death of a patient. The FDA placed a clinical hold on the trial on Dec. 22, Iovance said, in response to a fatal event that could be linked to its developing therapy for non-small-cell lung cancer, known as LN-145 TIL. Iovance said the death may have been linked to the so-called preconditioning regime a patient with this cancer, the most common form of lung cancer, must first undergo before they are then infused with LN-145. The group said the FDA hold would have no impact on its other trials, adding that it would work with the agency to attempt to resume enrollment in the trial. βIovance remains dedicated to addressing a significant unmet medical need for patients with advanced [non-small-cell lung cancer], who have poor prognosis following disease progression and limited treatment options," said Friedrich Graf Finckenstein, Iovance's chief medical officer. "We will work with the FDA to safely resume enrollment in the IOV-LUN-202 trial as soon as possible.β Iovance shares at last check were marked 21% lower at $7.02 each. In 2023 through the close of trading Tuesday the shares had been up 39%. The FDA is slated to rule on Iovance's developing Lifileucel drug, aimed at patients suffering from metastatic melanoma, a form of skin cancer, in February.
