*Any idea what this built-in-box in our bathroom is?*

We recently moved into our home (US, 1980s) and there’s a large cabinet-like box in the bathroom, between the toilet and sink. I have no idea why it’s here—it takes up a lot of space and ideally it would be great to have a cabinet there. Before I start tearing it up, does anyone have any idea if there’s a good reason for it? It’s hollow (from knocking on it), and there’s one electrical outlet on the right hand side.
