由庵野秀明创作并执导的跨媒体制作《新世纪福音战士》，开始只是一部典型的机甲动画，但逐渐发展成对机甲题材的存在主义解构，立刻赢得了批评界的赞誉。它长盛不衰的人气催生了大量的衍生漫画、改编小说、游戏、联名广告，甚至柏青哥赌博机；这些风靡也逐渐将 EVA 渗透到日本文化之中，最终受到了全日本乃至全球范围内的追捧。EVA 所用的视觉元素都成为了文化语汇，这里面就包括其主题字体：Matisse EB。
